Ltd. three times a year April August and December or thereabouts Original pictorial or decorated wrappers that is paper covers and 245 x 175 mm or thereabouts in dimensions. The pagination varies from 24 to 56. Illustrated from photos drawings The publication provides predominantly a rich insight into the lives of working people and the nascent middle class linesmen carpenters watchmen meter readers storemen mechanics and the other myriad occupations needed in supplying electricity to Adelaide and ultimately to the whole state. Few magazines span South Australia to quite the same extent. The work and leisure activities change over the years while human preoccupations with births marriages deaths sporting fixtures and social events remain relatively unchanging. With a substantial World War Two component in nos. 43 44 46-58 featuring Letters from the Fighting Forces and War-related articles. One no. 24 lacks one leaf no. 65 has worn and stained wrappers no. 85 lacks its wrappers and no. 87 has a largish chip to the leading edge of front wrapper but the others apart from some marking to a few blank rear wrappers are in generally very good to near fine condition. unknown
171521225London 1715. A petition to Parliament by the officers of Lieutenant General George Hamilton's Regiment of Foot seeking pay due for services abroad in the War of the Spanish Succession. Lord George Douglas-Hamilton 1666-1737 was a Scottish Williamite officer during the Glorious Revolution who later married William III's mistress Elizabeth Villiers became a confidant of William was created Earl of Orkney in 1696 was appointed Governor of Virginia in 1714 and in 1736 was the first British general promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. In 1701 at the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession Hamilton led the First Regiment of Foot the Royal Scots to the Netherlands where the regiment fought for the remainder of the war. Despite their long service and the high position of Hamilton the officers suggest in the present petition that having been so long overseas they had been forgotten by the British government and charge that they had not received their pay even after frequent petitions. The document is an early example of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. A rare political leaflet petitioning Parliament for relief of warrant officers who had fought in the recent War of the Spanish Succession. In March 1715 the House of Commons ordered that a list of all the regimental and warrant officers be drawn up but by the time of this document's printing numerous warrant officers had not been entered into the list and rumors had begun to circulate that they would therefore not be receiving expected compensation for their service. "Besides the Nature of several of the Warrant Officers Posts was such as they could not be put on a Regimental List viz. Directors of Hospitals Commissaries Officers who have lost their Limbs and many other Officers whose particular Hardships Pretensions and Disappointments are more at large set forth and specify'd in their several Warrants. So that their Condition is very deplorable." This is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. The sole edition of a pamphlet variously attributed to Bishop of Chichester Francis Hare 1671-1740 and physician and satirist William Wagstaff 1683/4-1725 demonstrating 'the Danger of leaving the House of Bourbon in possession of the whole Spanish Monarchy or of any considerable part of it' occasioned by the peace negotiations March-July 1710 held at Geertruidenberg in the United Provinces between representatives of Louis XIV and the Dutch in an attempt to conclude the War of the Spanish Succession and written partly in response to three contemporary pamphlets; The ballance of Europe: or an enquiry into the respective dangers of giving the Spanish monarchy to the Emperour as well as to King Philip; Reasons why this nation ought to put a speedy end to this expensive war; and An essay at a plain exposition of that difficult phrase a good peace - all commonly ascribed to Daniel Defoe 1660-1731. 1703139168London: Printed and sold by John Nutt 1703. Planting colonies in the Spanish Americas First edition preceding the second edition of that year with an added postscript. Published in the third year of the War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714 the anonymous author proposes that in return for the support of Britain and the Netherlands for the claim of the Emperor of Austria to the Spanish crown Spain's territories in America should be ceded to the two mercantile powers. They propose a confederation which will share the treasure from the Spanish mines keeping it out of the hands of a single monarch and in so doing preserve the balance of power in Europe. They moreover support extending the war to the Spanish West-Indies at that stage untouched by the conflict and offer proposals to plant colonies there. They respond to critics who would argue that such attempts at joint control of the American mines and territories would engender war between Britain and the Netherlands as trade brings peace and also reject the arguments that American wealth flowing into the mercantile nations would weaken the nation as was believed to be the case in Spain. The polemic nonetheless offers a stark realpolitik view of world politics and of the war treating as irrelevant the moral questions of stripping the territories of their nominal ally Habsburg Spain rather than the official war aims of taking French territories and stemming the growth of Bourbon power. A scarce treatise with ESTC locating six copies for this issue and a further two copies of the second edition Library Hub and Worldcat adding several more yet still absent from many prominent institutional collections and untraced in auction records. Small quarto 205 x 162 mm. Disbound pamphlet with remnants of original spine the pages numbered in an 18th-century hand 589-654 from its original place in the sammelband vol. Lightly browned and foxed top two cords mostly gone but bottom two holding light worming at foot not affecting text tiny hole affecting one letter to pp. 25/26. With a general title and 2 divisional titles for ad 6 and ad 11 all with a woodcut vignette further with 2 hand-coloured engraved maps 1 folding engraved plate and several woodcut initials. 12 parts in 1 volume. 134 pp. Collection of very rare pamphlets and printed letters published under a collective title on the actual political circumstances of Northern Europe in the years 1699-1701 especially in connection with the death of the Spanish King Charles II born in 1661 in 1700 leading to the War of the Spanish Succession 1701-1714. The work includes 2 maps of Flanders and a folding plate of the Battle of Narva which took place on 30 November 1700. Although the pamphlets and letters were printed separately the present collection appears to be very rare as we have not been able to find any other copies with the same contents.Charles died childless. His possessions would go to one of his brothers-in-law: the French King Louis XIV 1638-1715 or the German Emperor Leopold I 1640-1705. Both had agreed already beforehand that they would divide Charles heritage to avoid disturbance of the European balance of power. In his last will however Charles had appointed the grandson of Louis XIV as his successor named from now on Philip V of Spain 1683-1746. The Treaty of The Hague affirmed this in 1701. With the deaccession stamp of the "Bibliothèque municipale de Nîmes" on the title page and its shelf mark label at the foot of the spine. The vellum at the foot of the spine with a tear the boards are somewhat stained. The leaves are occasionally browned and foxed. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf.
