The Alien Office was created as a department of the Home Office to implement the Aliens Act 1793 which attempted to control the influx of foreign visitors and refugees caused by the turmoil in France. It ceased to exist following the Registration of Aliens Act 1836. created to control the influx of French refugees and suspected revolutionaries. The present document is 1p 4to. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice with wafer on reverse. Written out by a clerk and signed by Birnie and Mette. Reads: 'Middlesex towit / Eckhartt sic Martin Mette of No. 14 Vale Place Hammersmith in the County of Middlesex Tailor maketh oath and saith that he has either lost or mislaid the paper that exempts him from attending at the Alien Office every six Months / Eckhardt Martin Mette / Sworn before before me this 28th. 1873100082New York October 7-13 1873. 1873. Good. - A series of 4 associated autograph documents consisting of a 6-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Affidavit of Service" signed by George C. Lay notary public attesting that documents were served against James Lynch to appear and show cause in the case brought against him by Anne T. Bell. Attached to this affidavit are three autograph documents relating to the case each penned on 12-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide ruled paper. The first signed by the Chief Justice George Shea on October 7 1873 orders that "the defendant or his attorney show cause before me or one of the justices of this court. why the above entitled actions should not be set down for trial on the calendar of Part III of this court." Signed "Geo Shea". The second document signed by Walter Howe as managing clerk for Hilton Campbell & Bell regarding the case which was commenced in 1872 before Chief Justice Shea and reserved for trial. The document is docketed in ink on the verso. A third document signed by Philip J. Jackson in red ink as Justice of the Marine Court orders that the action be set down for trial on the calendar. This document is also docketed on the verso. Folded with a minor tear to the edge of one fold of the last document. There are occasional ink stains and smudges. Good. <p>Born in Ireland the American magistrate George Shea 1826-1895 was one of the attorneys representing Jefferson Davis the President of the Confederate States at the end of the Civil War. Shea served as corporation attorney for the City of New York and later became Chief Justice of the Marine Court of New York. Shea was the author of "Hamilton A Historical Study" published in 1877.
