La idea de esta investigación se inició con el estudio de la asignatura de "Historia Contemporánea de América", al haber llamado la atención a la autora el hecho de que Colombia, no obstante haberse constituido como república independiente en 1819 y pedir al año siguiente su reconocimiento a España, fue reconocida por su antigua metrópoli únicamente en 1881. Las cuestiones que no aparecían desveladas de modo suficiente eran las siguientes: ¿Qué razones tuvo España para no reconocer a Colombia como república independiente durante el largo tiempo de sesenta años? ¿Qué factores condicionaron y cuales hechos impidieron ese reconocimiento?
