La idea de esta investigación se inició con el estudio de la asignatura de "Historia Contemporánea de América", al haber llamado la atención a la autora el hecho de que Colombia, no obstante haberse constituido como república independiente en 1819 y pedir al año siguiente su reconocimiento a España, fue reconocida por su antigua metrópoli únicamente en 1881. Las cuestiones que no aparecían desveladas de modo suficiente eran las siguientes: ¿Qué razones tuvo España para no reconocer a Colombia como república independiente durante el largo tiempo de sesenta años? ¿Qué factores condicionaron y cuales hechos impidieron ese reconocimiento?

Ertugrul was a sailing frigate of the Ottoman Navy. while returning from a goodwill voyage from Japan in 1890, she encountered a typhoon off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture, subsequently drifted into a reef and sank. The maritime accident resulted in the loss of 533 sailors, including Admiral Ali Osman Pasha. Only sixty-nine sailors and officers survived and returned home later aboard two Japanese corvettes. The event is still commemorated as a foundation stone of Japanese-Turkish friendship.

Di lui infatti – sia prima che dopo l’elezione a Papa – è nota l’attenzione verso le altre comunità religiose, verso gli ortodossi di Grecia e dei Balcani di cui auspicò – e cercò di trattare – condizioni migliori da parte del dominatore turco; e verso gli stessi Ottomani per cui è noto persino un tentativo di “convertire” lo stesso Sultano; e poi verso gli ebrei di cui pose le condizioni per una maggiore libertà. BMC IV, 92; Goff p.713 This document provides a fundamental testimony on this extraordinary person who was at the same time a man of the Church - and of the "ecclesiastical apparatus" -, but also a great jurist, a man of culture, a humanist and a refined diplomat. The only bishop of Trieste (between 1447 and 1450) to have risen to the papal throne in 1458. Enea Silvio Piccolomini was a great ante-litteram ecumenist. In fact - both before and after his election as Pope - his attention is known to other religious communities, to the Orthodox of Greece and the Balkans, of whom he hoped - and tried to negotiate - better conditions on the part of the Turkish ruler; and towards the Ottomans themselves, for whom an attempt to "convert" the Sultan himself is known; and then towards the Jews of which he laid the conditions for greater freedom.
