The Singapore-born economics student Aravindan Balakrishnan or Comrade Bala became involved in leftist politics in England and led a Maoist commune in London from the 1970s until a daughter escaped the compound in 2013 and drew attention to its "sex cult" atmosphere. The organization was reported to have turned into a de facto prison in which women were brainwashed into believing that a force named Jackie would destroy them if they disobeyed Bala's commands.
