br. 1978. Mentre Negri teneva all'École Normale Supérieure di Parigi le celebri lezioni su "Marx oltre Marx", Althusser redigeva il lungo manoscritto "Marx dans ses limites". Due lavori essenzialmente complementari, poiché all'esigenza critica della concettualizzazione dei limiti della teoria marxiana segue il gesto creativo dell'andare oltre; la necessità di trasformare i presupposti del pensiero rivoluzionario. La tesi fondamentale del presente saggio è che la dialettica tra limiti e oltre permette di individuare, tra Negri e Althusser, una complessa relazione, fatta di approssimazioni teoriche e di persistenti distanze. Il "professore", come lo chiamano a Capua, nonostante le persecuzioni del regime, insieme alla moglie Margherita tesse i rapporti con la rete clandestina del Pci, partecipa alla redazione e alla stampa dell'unico giornale di opposizione diffuso in tutta la Campania, "Il Proletario", tiene accesa la fiaccola delle idee di giustizia e di libertà tra i giovani e, attraverso le sue lezioni private, l'unico lavoro che gli è permesso, forma una parte importante della classe dirigente del dopoguerra della sinistra di Terra di Lavoro. Dopo la sua prematura e tragica morte i giovanissimi allievi ne raccolgono l'eredità culturale e politica e partecipano al processo di ricostruzione della democrazia e del paese. Attraverso la storia familiare e politica dei protagonisti emerge il filo rosso che lega le lotte per la democrazia del secolo scorso alle tendenze più avanzate della stagione risorgimentale.
