ill., br. La prima edizione del Compendio del Capitale di Marx curata da Cafiero esce a Milano nel 1879. Da allora si sono succedute ben 18 edizioni. Una fortuna che premia un testo sintetico e chiaro nell'esposizione dell'opera marxiana, il primo del suo genere in Italia, che lo stesso Marx elogia con parole di apprezzamento. Curioso destino questo del Capitale, che ha la sua prima diffusione proprio grazie agli anarchici, avversari della politica marxista. Il motivo di tale iniziativa lo spiega bene lo stesso Cafiero nella sua prefazione alla prima edizione, imputando alla complessità di un'opera fondamentale del pensiero socialista contemporaneo la difficoltà di essere compresa dalle classi meno acculturate. Cafiero coglie con sorprendente lucidità gli elementi principali del primo libro del Capitale, quello sullo sviluppo della produzione capitalista, unendo ad un'analisi scientifica la passione per la conoscenza e la giustizia sociale.
