Rear joint starting ~ 2.5 cm at head of spine on Tome 1. Age toning to interiors with marginalia scattered throughout set. First gathering of Tome 9-10 is loosening but is still attached. Pages 1-14 of Tome 11-12 are detached but still laid in place with some nicking and creasing to the edges. All volumes contain the bookplate of Samson B. Knoll an Austrian-born and German-educated historian who fled Nazi Germany and became a sergeant in the Intelligence division of the U.S. Army. Knoll was also a friend of Mildred Harnack who was the only American woman sentenced to death by Hitler. Later in life Knoll was a history professor and the president of the Monterey Institute of International Studies now known as the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Knoll's bookplate was designed for him by the Flemish artist Frans Masereel. Due to the size and weight of this set additional postage will be required for expedited and international orders. . 019151Paul Déroulède (1846-1914), poète, écrivain, homme politique, député de la Charente. L.A.S., Saint Sébastien, 7 décembre 1904, 2p in-4. Importante lettre à Gaston Calmette (1858-1914), directeur du Figaro, autour de son duel avec Jean Jaurès, la veille de cette lettre : « Merci d'abord de toutes les sympathies témoignées, cher ami, ensuite et d'urgence, si vous le voulez bien deux mots de rectification. M. Jaurès seul avait donné sa parole de ne pas se battre en Espagne. Pour moi, au contraire, fort préoccupé de ne prendre aucun nouvel engagement qui put faire obstacle à l'engagement pris avec M. Jaurès, je me suis obstinément refusé à toute comparution devant le gouverneur et à toute délibération avec qui que ce soit. Ce refus obstiné m'a fait presque maltraiter par un des agents du gouverneur et le mot d'expulsion a même été prononcé. Je n'en ai pas moins fait dire par mes témoins aux témoins de M. Jaurès que l'expulsion aussi faisait partie des risque que j'étais prêt à courir pour cette rencontre. Quant à l'article 439 du Code pénal espagnol que l'on a exhumé contre notre duel, j'avais reçu la veille encore l'assurance de la bouche d'un sénateur du royaume, homme très sérieux et très renseigné, l'assurance que ledit article était absolument tombé en désuétude et, qu'avec un peu de précautions prises par nous sur le territoire espagnol pour ne pas braver la loi, il n'y aurait ni interdiction ni expulsion. Votre collaborateur s'était trompé. Amitiés et toujours merci. Déroulède ». En novembre 1904, un enseignant se moque de Jeanne d'Arc, l'affaire fait grand bruit, l'Humanité et la droite nationaliste s'en emparent et les accusations de Déroulède poussent Jaurès à demander réparation par un duel. Déroulède étant proscrit, il était en exil en Espagne. Toutefois, le duel ne put y avoir lieu et Emile Combes l'autorisa à revenir 24h en France pour ce duel, voulant ainsi ne pas perdre le soutien de Jaurés. Personne ne fut blessé. On joint l'importante déclaration de Paul Déroulède ayant entrainé le duel, datée du 30 novembre 1904 (1p in-4), qui a été adressée à François Coppée, Jean Jaurès, à l'agences Havas et à 8 journaux dont celui de Calmette. Citons ce passage qui a tout déclenché : « Je tiens Jeanne d'Arc pour la plus sublime héroïne de toute notre héroïque histoire ; François Coppée et ses jeunes protestataires pour des patriotes d'autant plus nécessaires à la Patrie que vos disciples et vous lui êtes plus funestes. Je vous tiens vous, Monsieur Jaurès, pour le plus odieux pervertisseur de consciences qui ait jamais fait en France le jeu de l'étranger sans avoir su même par là vous concilier ni l'estime ni la sympathie de ces frères allemandes en faveur desquels vous vous évertuez à nous faire renier nos frères de l'Alsace et de la Lorraine. Rappelez-vous l'injurieux mépris de Bebel pour votre socialisme ministériel, rappelez-vous le dernier jugement de Kautski sur votre république franc-maçonne, délatrice et policière. Déroulède ». Cette déclaration a été copiée par Jeanne Mangetin (1876-1961) épouse de Paul Déroulède (1866-1938), fils de l'écrivain. Cela nous est confirmé par un document proposé par notre confrère Traces Ecrites (ref.9810) dont l'écriture de la lettre signée « J Déroulède » est la même. Extraordinaire document. [393]

Jean Jaurès apologizes for the irregularity with which he transmits his articles for a few months. He assures Arthur Huc that from now on he will endeavor to return his article on time and that he will send it to him every Tuesday. Then Jean Jaurès wiped a paragraph concerning articles planned for the following month and the sums relating to their regulations. unknown

Marginal lack affecting 3 letters on pp. 467-469 some reading marks by the dedicatee in pencil in margins of certain paragraphs. Rare autograph inscription signed by Jean Jaurès: ""Au citoyen Mauranges. Jean Jaurès."" Georges Mauranges 1884-1975 lawyer at the Parliament of Paris and member of the Socialist Party from 1905 identified with the ""right wing"" of the movement. Imprimerie Lenepveu Paris s. d. janvier 1900 49.80 x 65.20 cm une affiche Original colour lithographed poster depicting Jean Jaurès as an elephant sitting on a chair and holding a bottle of water from the Jordan. Until then portrayed as a dog caricaturists mocking his aggressiveness Jean Jaurès is here for the first time represented as an elephant. It is a question here of highlighting his potbelly and his pachyderm silhouette but we can nevertheless highlight the great dignity of this massive personality with a high gaze. The water from the Jordan is held on one of his hoofs and alludes to the rumour that he had his son baptised in the scared river thus acting against his anticlerical policy. Despite the caricaturist's desire to ridicule Jean Jaurès the choice of the elephant a symbol of strength prosperity and wisdom is ultimately positive. Transverse folds and tiny minor marginal tears. Circulated between October 1899 and December 1900 in a France set ablaze by the Dreyfus Affair these immense colour portraits are the work of Victor Lenepveu who announced the publication of 150 and then 200 drawings before finally producing only around fifty. Despite the 1881 law on the freedom of press allowing the dissemination of a politically subversive image the publication of this nightmarish pantheon was interrupted by order of the Ministry of the Interior. The fragility of the paper and the imposing size of these very violent posters as well as their almost immediate seizure by the police contributed to the disappearance of these caricatures which strongly left a mark on public opinion. These horreurs were widely promoted by anti-Semitic newspapers that announced a fantasised print of 300000 copies thus insinuating the success of anti-Semitic ideas in the population. On 1st October 1899 L'Intransigeant announced the publication of the Musée des horreurs in its columns: Un dessinateur de beaucoup d'esprit au coup de crayon d'un comique intense M. V. Lenepveu a eu l'heureuse idée d'inaugurer une série de portraits des vendus les plus célèbres de la tourbe dreyfusarde. Le titre de cette série « Musée des Horreurs » est suffisamment suggestif et indique bien ce qu'il promet. . C'est la maison Hayard qui mettra en vente à partir d'aujourd'hui le numéro 1 de cette désopilante série. An artist of great spirit with an intense comical pencil stroke M. V. Lenepveu had the happy idea of inaugurating a series of portraits of the most famous sellouts of the Dreyfusard rabble. The title of this series Musée des Horreurs is sufficiently suggestive and is a good indicator of what it promises. . It is Maison Hayard that will put up for sale from today issue number 1 of this hilarious series. First a peddler then a bookseller-publisher Napoléon Hayard known as Léon Hayard specialised in the marketing of anti-Dreyfusard and anti-Semitic ephemera and advertisements. Today however copies in good condition of these pamphlet caricatures which contributed to the social and political divide of France are very rare. Published in the booming written press - at the same time as Émile Zola's famous J'accuse ! - these propaganda materials had a significant impact on the younger generations and preceded the ideological violence of the 20th century.
