Couverture et superbe illustrations en noir in et hors texte de Mabel Holland Thomas, épouse de l'auteur. Ce roman raconte l’histoire d’un groupe de déportés politiques qu’un naufrage laisse sur une île déserte où ils se libèrent de leurs gardiens pour créer une colonie anarchiste, cependant que les gardiens tentent de reconstituer la civilisation qu’ils connaissaient en Europe. Bel état général pour ce livre très fragile. Très rare édition originale. A noter que l'auteur écopa de deux ans de prison, suite à la publication de son livre en 1893, " La Société mourante et l'Anarchie ", avec préface de Octave Mirbeau.
