"The mistakes at the Yalta Conference, which permitted the Soviet Union to drop an Iron Curtain over Eastern Europe, have often been attributed to the ill health of President Roosevelt. But new information, leaking out over four decades, points conclusively to the fact that there were no 'mistakes.'" - Foreword. In later years Tucker (1934-2013) rose to fame as he tracked the surreptitious activities of the Bilderberg Group. Binding intact. Somewhat above-average wear. A sound reading copy. Book
Inscribed and initialed by Polanyi to "Sir Ernest and Lady Simon", Sir Ernest Simon, The Lord Simon of Wythenshawe, and his wife, upon front free endpaper. Simon, a British industrialist, politician and public servant, had a long association with the University of Manchester where Polanyi was a professor at the time of publication. Ink stamp reading "University of Manchester Broomcroft Hall" atop front free endpaper and inside back board solidifies this provenance as it was then the residence of the Simons. ix, [1], 116 pages. Includes these essays: The Rights and Duties of Science (1939), Collectivist Planning (1940), Soviet Economics - Fact and Theory (1935), and Truth and Propaganda (1936). "In those years the ideas of liberty... were left almost uncultivated." - from Preface. Minimal faint pencil markings to contents. Average wear and some fading to publisher's pale green cloth which is sunned at spine. Binding intact. Heavy wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. Today, the thoughts of the author, a scientist and philosopher who lived from 1891 to 1976, are faithfully upheld by a society named in his honour. Book

Hefty tome detailing this heavily (though not exclusively) Jewish & Italian Union's first 12 years--organizing, strikes, allies, etc. The union, officially founded in 1914, had its roots in the massive 1910 strike in Chicago (against Hart, Schaffner, & Marx) , primarily led at the shop floor level by Jewish and Italian women, at the top by Sidney Hillman, and aided by Jane Addams and the Women's Trade Union League. The union was condemned by Sam Gompers as a breakaway from the craft-organized (and largely nativist) United Garment Workers of the AFL, and became leaders of a "new unionism" that included the development of unemployment insurance, cooperative housing, labor banking, & consumer cooperatives. 8vo, br. ed. 304pp. Ten engaging personal histories introduce readers to what it was like to live in and with the most powerful political machine ever created: the Chinese Communist Party. Detailing the life of ten people who led or engaged with the Chinese Communist Party, one each for one of its ten decades of its existence, these essays reflect on the Party's relentless pursuit of power and extraordinary adaptability through the transformative decades since 1921. Demonstrating that the history of the Chinese Communist Party is not one story but many stories, readers learn about paths not taken, the role of chance, ideas and persons silenced, hopes both lost and fulfilled. This vivid mosaic of lives and voices draws together one hundred years of modern Chinese history - and illuminates possible paths for China's future
