13295An interesting collection of tiny flags each measuring 1" x 1 1/4" approx.; many with written identifiers; flag with three vertical bars dark blue yellow & red with black & white portrait of a Woman in blouse and tie back with 'Edith Cavell Memorial Fund' Edith Cavell 1866 - 1915. English nurse. In 1907 she established a training school for nurses in Brussels in which hundreds of Belgian and German nurses were trained. In August 1915 during the German occupation of the city under the civil governorship of Baron von der Lancken Miss Cavell was suddenly arrested and imprisoned. She was charged with having aided English and Belgian young men who had come under her care as a nurse to escape into Holland. Following trial in military court October 7-8 she was secretly condemned to be executed. Despite all efforts of the American minister Miss Cavell was shot at 2 am October 13 1915.; R N L I Royal Navy ; Red Cross back with 'Royal Scottish Greys'; Scottish Churches with Scottish Churches-Huts in France on back; Scottish Women's Hospitals Fund; United States with 48 stars made from metal; French Relief Fund - Scotland's Flag Day on back; Jocks Box - on back is "For Glasgow's Brave Lads Hands Across. rubbed out; Soldiers' Home for Redford Midlothian Flag Day 20th Nov. 1915 - on back "Second to None"; Lion Rampant with Locomotive on back and "Springburn & Cowlairs Soldiers & Sailors; Glasgow Corporation Belgian Refugees Committee more; only the one dated flag however all appear to be of World War I vintage or thereabourts; nicely presented on matte black cloth over foam in glass-covered flat case; all with old pins as the masts; some wear and rubbing to flags a few with closed tears and some fading; overall very good condition and an interesting grouping.
