A beautifully illustrated yachting monograph First and only edition of this handsome visual record this copy in the scarcer publisher's morocco binding it is usually found in blue cloth. The Royal Clyde Yacht Club founded in 1856 was the biggest in Britain at the end of the 19th century and Clyde yachts were world famous as pioneers of the relatively new sport of yacht racing. "It will be seen that for the most part the period dealt with is that lying between the beginning of 1880 and the end of 1887. Four boats built prior to 1880 have been given a place in our book - namely the Cyprus Madge Neva and Viril - because they were amongst the most notable of the boasts which ushered in the type so popular in after years" Preface. The fine chromolithographs reproduce a series of watercolours by Henry Shields RBA 1859-1935 showing famous yachts or "white wings". Three of them were America's Cup challengers: the Genesta 1884 Galatea 1886 and Thistle 1887. Folio. Chromolithograph frontispiece bound after list of plates us usual and 31 mounted chromolithographic plates small sketches of Clyde Regatta incidents in the text. Ownership inscription on title page verso of one S. C. Graham Robertson dated June 1888; possibly the Graham Robertson who was Marine Surveyor to the Government of Bengal and in 1894 elected a member of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects. A few shallow scratches and abrasions to covers more noticeably to back cover some skilful recolouring of leather at extremities scattered foxing. A very good copy. hardcover

18451358841845. Rare printing of the 1845 annual report of the Commissioner of the General Land Office of the United States of America. Octavo disbound. Contains numerous folding maps and public surveys of Indiana Michigan Iowa Wisconsin Missouri Illinois Arkansas South Tennessee Southeastern Louisiana Alabama showing Chickasaw Cherokee and Creek Cessions and the State of Florida. In near fine condition. Rare. The first great expansion of the United States of America came with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 which doubled the country's territory although the southeastern border with Spanish Florida was the subject of much dispute until it and Spanish claims to the Oregon Country were ceded to the US in 1821. The annexation of the Republic of Texas in 1845 led directly to the Mexican–American War after which the victorious United States obtained the northern half of Mexico's territory including what was quickly made the state of California. However as the development of the country moved west the question of slavery became more important with vigorous debate over whether the new territories would allow slavery and events such as the Missouri Compromise and Bleeding Kansas. This came to a head in 1860 and 1861 when the governments of the southern states proclaimed their secession from the country and formed the Confederate States of America leading to the American Civil War. unknown
18292994Mexico City: January 5 1829. Very good. Broadside 12 x 8.25 inches. Light wear center horizontal fold pinholes along left edge. A rare decree issued by Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil Governor of the Federal District attempting to regulate the disbursement and possession of guns in Mexico in 1829. Tornel notes that in recent times weapons belonging to the army have been "misplaced" around Mexico City. Collecting the weapons is "extremely urgent because the destiny of these weapons is to serve internal tranquility and the defense of the republic against external enemies." The order reserves the right of access to weapons for those "enlisted in the permanent active or local militia." Tornel authorizes the commanding general and local militia leaders to collect weapons held by civilians without a license to carry them. The bottom of the decree is signed in type by Tornel and his secretary.<br /> <br /> The presidential election of September 1 1828 saw Guerrero come in second. Two weeks later Santa Anna rose in support of Guerrero in Vera Cruz. In November of that year in Mexico City Guerrero supporters took control of the Acordada a former prison transformed into an armory and days of fighting broke out in the capital. These are no doubt the "recent events" referred to in the present decree that led to arms being scattered around the city. An interesting moment in the history of gun control in Mexico and a rare decree. OCLC reports just a single copy of this decree at the Bancroft Library. January 5 unknown

1856AQ242771856. Manuscript on paper. Single bifolium. With original stamped envelope. Old horizontal and vertical folds. Short tears at folds cross-written on terminal page. Envelope worn and soiled. An autograph letter in the hand of private Thomas Arms of the 12th Royal Lancers addressed to his sister written at Scutari Istanbul 17th January 1856 two months prior to the cessation of hostilities during the Crimean War. Arms references his participation in the Battle of Tchernaïa the fall of Sebastopol and the conditions he and his fellow soldiers had to endure: 'You wished for some small token from Sebastopol but I had nothing but a Russian musket and bayonet and those I sold to one of our officers as I have no means of sending it to England.things are very dear 1lb of bread here is 1/6 meat we cannot buy for any price we give 2 shillings for a bottle of porter or ale and we are only getting half allowance of rum to what we used to get and there it is a great deal of gambling amongst the troops'. The cross-written portion of the letter is of particular note for a passing mention of reformer of army medical services and of nursing organisation Florence Nightingale 1820-1910: 'Dear sister their sic are some kind ladies in these hospitals and kind nurses here to attend upon you. Miss Nightingale is here and Miss Roberts and some more very amicable from England'. . unknown

Calligraphic and illuminated folded vellum document measuring 20 x 21 inches and with blue double-rule border and four armorial bearings including that of Martin in the upper left corner and the royal arms of Queen Victoria; signed by "W Betham Ulster King of Arms of all Ireland" at lower folded edge; accompanied by Betham's red wax seal in a cylindrical gilt metal skippet with crown relief. Skippet has come free of the ribbon but is present and in good condition. A very good examplar.This somewhat tragic grant of arms was granted to Jone Gonne Bell a cousin of Mary Letitia Martin upon their marriage his his change of name from Bell to Martin. Mary Letitia Martin was an Irish writer who was known as the "Princess of Connemara" as she was borne into the chief landowning family of Connemara the Martins of Ballynahinch Castle. An autodidact she was well read and fluent in numerous languages. She published two books in her lifetime and a third was published posthumously. As we can see she married her cousin in 1847 but when her father died two years later and she inherited the estate she soon found herself penniless due to the great famine. She and Arthur left Ireland for Belgium where she secured a living by writing for periodicals. In 1850 the same year as her autobiographical novel Julia Howard was published they set sail for America. She had her child prematurely on that voyage and ten days after arriving in New York both she and her baby died.Sir William Betham 1779–1853 was an Irish officer of arms an author and a member of the American Antiquarian Society. He served as Ulster King of Arms from 1820 until his death more than thirty years later. N.p. hardcover
