A fair copy only. <br /> <br /> From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> Simon Cameron March 8 1799 – June 26 18891 was an American businessman and politician who represented Pennsylvania in the United States Senate and served as United States Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln at the start of the American Civil War.<br /> <br /> A native of Maytown Pennsylvania Cameron made a fortune in railways canals and banking.2 He was elected to the United States Senate as a member of the Democratic Party in 1845. A persistent opponent of slavery Cameron briefly joined the Know Nothing Party before switching to the Republican Party in 1856. He won election to another term in the Senate in 1857 and provided pivotal support to Abraham Lincoln at the 1860 Republican National Convention.<br /> <br /> Lincoln appointed Cameron as his first Secretary of War. Cameron's wartime tenure was marked by allegations of corruption and lax management and he was demoted to Ambassador to Russia in January 1862. Edward Shippen IV 1729-1806 was lawyer judge government official and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia. In 1791 he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court serving with Jasper Yeates and Edward Burd both kinsmen and former students. Shippen became chief justice in 1799 but in 1804 was impeached on flimsey political grounds. The next year the Pennsylvania Senate acquitted him and his associates. 8vo 491 86 pp. The text is followed by a 96-page appendix which cites numerous legal points in previous cases as they relate to this one. This report of the committee of the Pennsylvania Senate declared that bridges erected from Zane's Island to both Virginia and Ohio obstructed the navigation of the Ohio River impacting the movement of steamboats and other boats to and from the port of Pittsburg. This was part of a case that concluded before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1855 as Pennsylvania v. Wheeling & Belmont Bridge Co. 59 U.S. 18 How. 421 commonly known as the Wheeling Bridge Case. 1854103167<p>Offering this original piece of Americana <em>Report of the Select Committee of the Senate in Relation to the Proceedings of The Board of Commissioners on the Claims Against Mexico March 28 1854 - ordered to be printed. </em>Washington DC: Beverly Tucker Printer to the Senate 1854 1st edition.</p><p>Overall condition is Good. The once-purple cloth has become a greyish-black due to oxidation of the dye; there's a smallchip in the cloth on the back along the spine and a little bit of loss at the spine head. The cover is blindstamped with decorations and text. The spine once had gilt but only a faint amount remains. The inside pages are moderately foxed but still somewhat bright and completely legible easy to read. The edges are darkened. There are a couple of tree leaves left between pages creating tan shadows on these pages see the one picture. The pages are all intact and the binding remains strong and secure.</p><p>This report investigated a massive fraud within the Board of Commissioners created by the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe. Historically referred to as the "Gardiner Claim" it involved two Gardiner brothers who concocted a false claim that Mexico had destroyed their profitable silver mines in Mexico which they never owned during the war in order to secure a payout. Mexico fell for the scheme and awarded the Gardners a lot of money. The mines were discovered to be a myth and so the investigations began in 1851 ultimately ending in convictions in 1854.
