Stevenson III 1930-2021 U.S. Senator from Illinois 1969-81 who at this time chaired the Senate Ethics Committee which in 1979 officially censured Georgia senator Herman E. Talmadge for financial irregularities -- report of which may well be contained within this volume. "Senator Adlai E. Stevenson" giltstamped along bottom spine against green background. Senate Report No. 183 of the 42nd Congress May 1872 was a landmark investigation by the Senate Committee on Investigation and Retrenchment examining U. S. Government arms sales to French agents during the 1870–1871 Franco-Prussian War. The investigation concluded that while arms were sold they were not illegal and the proceeds were accounted for clearing the government of wrongdoing. Following the American Civil War the U. S. Had a massive surplus of arms. During the Franco-Prussian War French agents purchased tens of thousands of rifles including Springfields and 400 cartridges per gun from the U. S. Includes a fold-out map: "Extract from A Map of the British & French Dominions in North America" by Jno. Mitchell from 1755. The map measures approximately 13 1/2 x 14" has edge tears fading/foxing and is fragile. From the Joint Committee on Public Lands.
