New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 390 p. Istanbul's great war: Public order, crime and punishment in the Ottoman capital, (1914-1918). Istanbul's Great War: Public Order, Crime and Punishment in the Ottoman Capital, 1914-1918 is a study of the social and economic life in an imperial capital at a time when the first total war of history swept through Europe, hitting the entire Ottoman Empire up to its borderlands in the Arab Peninsula. The book focuses on the impact of wartime conditions on life in a city of nearly a million citizens, with a specific emphasis on public order, crime and punishment. The author, Deniz Dölek-Sever, takes us through a six-chapter panorama of four years of hardship in the Ottoman capital during the war, analyzing various aspects of public order, crime and punishment as experienced daily by both Muslim and non-Muslim inhabitants of Istanbul, and as perceived by the state. In doing so, her study uncovers inner workings behind state officials' policies on public order and crime. Tracing instruments of surveillance and control and various crime categories, and making extensive use of primary sources, the work provides a unique understanding of public order and crime, as well as practices of punishment in a period when the Committee of Union and Progress reigned over the political life of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul's Great War is an attempt to bring a fresh approach to the current literature on wartime Ottoman Empire.

New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 264 p. The Young Turks: Struggle for the Ottoman Empire, 1914-1918. The Unionists hoped to do so by avoiding any further wars and ending their isolation by forming an alliance with the Triple Entente composed of England, France and Russia. When they were turndown by the Entente powers, they turned to Germany. Berlin finally signed the alliance after the war had begun in Europe in August. Germany's reason was ideological: the Ottoman Sultan-Caliph could broaden the war by declaring jihad or "holy war" against the Entente powers, causing Muslims to rebel in British India and Egypt, French North Africa, and the Russian Caucasus. Though the Ottomans were allied with Germany, they believed that the alliance did not commit them to enter the war. But their treasury was empty and the economic situation precarious. Only Germany was willing to give loans, but only on the condition they enter the war. Istanbul was forced to submit and entered the war after the Black Sea incident when Ottoman ships -led by a German admiral- bombarded Russia's ports on 29 October and the Entente declared war on the Ottomans in November. Istanbul declared jihad on the 11th and that turned a European war into a world war, thus extending it by perhaps three years. This book is a study of the Young Turks and their struggle to save the Ottoman Empire during the Great War of 1914-1918. It is the sequel to The Young Turks the Committee of Union and Progress in Turkish Politics, 1908-1914.

Stamped ownerships of John Guy Eshleman (1877-1966) an important figure in Lancaster, PA. Hardbound. Very Good. Formerly attributed to Benjamin Franklin or his son William, this was probably mostly composed by Richard Jackson. Richard Jackson (d. 1787), London barrister, was called, because of his wide knowledge, 'the Omniscient Jackson.' He was agent for Connecticut, 1760-71; for Pennsylvania, 1763-70; and for Massachusetts, 1765-67; counsel to the Board of Trade, 1770, and M.P., 1762-84. He and Franklin assisted each other in preparing important pamphlets on colonial affairs. Through this review an argument is made asserting the primacy of the Provincial Assembly over the Proprietors. Sabin 25605 (citing the 1818 Philadelphia edition); Howes P204; Ford 253. EVANS2
