First edition of this important document on penal reform from whence the famous statement "the law must follow the convicted man into the prison where it has sent him" originated later quoted by Foucault in Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison published on 21 December 1819. Decazes 1780-1860 was the Minister Secretary of State at the Department of the Interior under Louis XVIII; his report discusses previous prison legislation with particular reference to diet and the separation of the sexes. WorldCat lists just five copies in institutional holdings worldwide only one of which is located outside of France Harvard. Quarto 240 x 196 mm. Contemporary blue coated paper wrappers. Paris 'Wednesday evening'no date The young Decazes was a magistrate in the South-West of France then moved to Paris. Immediately after Waterloo as Captain of a Company of the National Guard he seized and closed the Palais-Bourbon 8th July 1815 thus ending the Provisional Government's opposition to Louis XVIII's return. When the Duc de Richelieu retired as Chief Minister in 1818 Decazes formed a new ministry with General Dessolle as nominal president and himself as Minister of the Interior and Police. In the outcry following the assassination of the King's nephew the Duc de Berri 13th February 1820 he had to resign and was sent by Louis XVIII as ambassador to England 1820-1821. unknown
