Gorgeous illuminated and calligraphic manuscript on vellum leaves magnificently bound. Supposedly this showcase manuscript was on display at the Exposition Universelle de Bruxelles in 1910! The manuscript is written in French and based on a Spanish tale. 4to. 29.5 by 22.5 cm. 21 vellum leaves including blanks featuring 13 watercolor illustrations three headings with large decorative initials in red blue and green and 69 smaller decorative initials also colored. Additional pictorial architectural title in grisaille watercolour over pencil with title in gold and "Pour Monsieur Raymond Claude Lafontaine" at foot. Primary title -- some might regard this as the half-title -- has red and black lettering and below appears a vignette of a knight holding a disembodied head. All the watercolor paintings are signed with the artist's initials. Two bookplates. One is etched the other is of P.Brunet. Both are mounted on front free endpaper. Endpapers are a gold and green patterned silk. The spectacular binding was done by Henri Marius Michel. The cover has a geometrical design of nine deeply inset panels inlaid with leaves and berries in morocco of various reds and browns. The spine is rounded and has four pairs of raised bands. The turn-ins are of light brown morocco ruled in gilt with crimson morocco leaf at corners gold brocade doublures and flyleaves. The binding epitomizes an Art Nouveau aesthetic with homage to the Gothic or Medieval. Condition: book itself without issue as is DJ which is quarter morocco morocco fold marbled paper pastedown matching that of slipcase. Slipcase with minor rubbing. unknown

Octavo 19.5cm.; publisher's cream card wrappers printed in orange and black; 118pp. Spine rather significantly cocked some wear to extremities; still quite a Very Good fresh copy of a scarce edition. A series of fictional conversations and debates between a student a "borghese" an anarchist-socialist a judge and a merchant. Divided into chapters the "characters" discuss a socialist constitution economics communism government laws and communist anarchism. The first ten conversations were written in 1897 before Malatesta fled Italy and were based on his experiences as the frequenter of "a café that was not usually the haunt of subversives such as himself.Anarchism would almost certainly have been one of the topics of conversation since the anarchists of the city Ancona constantly bombarded their fellow townspeople with a barrage of propaganda" Robin Healey "Italian Literature Before 1900 in English Translation" 0584 citing the 2005 translation. Only upon his return to Ancona in 1913 did Malatesta revisit the conversations publishing the first ten in his new journal "Volontà" though they were not fully completed until after the end of World War I in 1920 shortly before the author's arrest. Though his home was searched and arms and explosives discovered the manuscript was either missed or ignored and published in its entirey for the first time in this edition with a short afterword by Luigi Fabbri co-editor with Malatesta of the journal "L'Agitazione." The Platformists including Nestor Makhno called for a degree of organization in the international anarchist movement that they believed would give it greater resilience taking lessons from the defeat of anarchists by the Bolsheviks after the Russian Revolution.
