19415699Washington DC 1941. Very good plus. 51pp. Original self wrappers. Soft horizontal crease. A slip-bill printing of the Gillette Propaganda Exposure Bill of 1941 proposed by Iowa Senator Guy Gillette. The bill sought "to protect the integrity of the democratic process by requiring disclosure of persons writing publishing and circulating scurrilous literature in connection with political campaigns; to deny the use of the mails to such literature and to prohibit its importation into the United States in default of such disclosure; and for other purposes." The text of the bill opens by attempting to outlaw "all published matter" which causes "public hatred or contempt" for any American citizen "because of race religion descent or nationality" during national elections and those in Hawaii Alaska and Puerto Rico. The bill also sought to establish an Office of Minority Relations to enforce the law and provided penalties to anyone breaking the new law. The final line of the bill states that it should be referred to as the "Propaganda Exposure Act 1941." Calling for honesty fairness and equal treatment in American political elections It'll never pass and it didn't. unknown

1944888911944. JAPANESE PROPAGANDA Asahi Shimbunsha. SAKURA. Volume 6 #2 #31 overall. Large wrappered staple bound illustrated photomagazine in the tradition of FRONT and HOMELIFE. This number published in February of 1944 celebrated the plans for a cross continental railway to cross Eurasia from Tokyo to Berlin complete with an undersea tunnel from Japan to the mainland. SAKURA magazine was written in English Chinese and French. The whole world seems to lay at the feet of the Axis in this rosy scenario as sketched throughout the magazine. East Asia under the guidance of Imperial Japan is on the march to build a new world. Yet by February of 1944 the Red Army was in Poland and the Ukraine Sevastopol was cut off times were bleak for the 1000 year Reich indeed. Closer to home the Allies had "turned the corner" in the Western Pacific had isolated the large Japanese force at Rabaul and were headed north towards the homeland. At some point during the war reality and appearance began a rapid divergence and as the end approached it became all pure delusion. All of which does not obviate what an amazing visual feast SAKURA is from the covers to the ads a consistent message of normalcy progress and steadfast purpose in a great task. unknown
216197Japan. Early 20th Century. Colour woodblock fan print 24.5 x 25cm very good copy. This fan-shaped colour woodblock print features a 1894 battle scene from the Sino-Japanese War in Pyongyang. In order to break into the Chinese fortress a group of Japanese solders climbed over a wall opened the gate and led the Japanese troops in. Among the soldiers Harada Jukichi became well-known as one of the bravest returning home to hero's welcome after the war. However he was overwhelmed with numerous visitors which ended up forcing him into serious debt. In order to pay off this debt he travelled throughout Japan re-enacting the fighting and victorious scenes on stage. This print depicts courageous Harada single handed taking on his Chinese enemies who are falling or fleeing. . unknown
1940216176Japan. 1940. Two coloured fan prints 27.5 x 26cm. Occasional light marks a little light browning. Very good. These two propaganda prints were created to make children's paper fans each carrying patriotic messages and delicately rendered in bright colors.<br><br>The first sheet features a young boy on a white horse blowing a bugle. A Japanese warplane is seen flying in the sky with the rising sun in the background. The caption urges people not to disclose any military secrets even to close friends. Additionally the lyrics of the 1940 nationalistic song "Kokumin Shingunka" are printed on the sheet. <br><br>The second sheet depicts an idyllic scene of children playing by a lake catching dragonflies and fish. The boys are portrayed in more active roles while the girls hold a bucket or a cage. The message on this sheet reads "East Asia's Future is Bright and Children are Thriving." A warplane can be seen in the sky in the far distance subtly tying the peaceful scene to the wartime context. . unknown
1951222708North Korea or China.: Korean People's Army or People's Volunteer Army. Circa1951-1953. Two double-sided leaflets. Darling I Will Dream: 21 x 15cm. Truth Will Out: 19 x 13cm. Both leaflets somewhat foxed and trifle soiled chipped with a little loss though still in good condition for what were most likely once-active leaflets in a warzone. Two propaganda leaflets intended to be dropped over UN Forces in Korea attempting to convince them to surrender and cooperate with the KPA and PVA. Each leaflet appeals to different modes of persuasion with one relying on an emotional appeal and the other from the perspective of logic. <br> <br>'Darling I Will Dream That You Are Coming Back to Me This Christmas' is a typical example in the long-winded history of so-called 'counterfeit Christmas cards' that purport to show wistful appeals from sweethearts abandoned back home. The addition of the details of a supposedly deceased GI are intended to add credence to the letter's authenticity though a quick search reveals the soldier in question returned home after his successful tour of duty in Korea married his sweetheart and led out the rest of his life very well. <br> <br>'Truth Will Out' is a very early example of the conflicting narratives that permeate the North Korean historiography of the Armistice Agreement - most retellings largely hinging on the portrayal of the American leadership as a gaggle of mercurial incompetents. <br> <br>This particular account details a ceasefire negotiation in which General William K. Harrison abruptly walked out before waiting to hear General Nam Il's "very reasonable proposal". The ultimate purpose of this tale is to encourage UN Forces to passively revolt in protest. While the event did indeed take place in June 1952 in reality Harrison was not empowered to hear counter-proposals and called a recess before Nam Il had the opportunity to launch into what would have undoubtedly been an over-rehearsed propagandistic diatribe. D. Bruce Lockerbie the author of Harrison's biography theorised that the ultimate goal of the American delegation's walk-out was to not only deny the North Koreans a platform but also shock them which it evidently did. . 1950179481Circa1950. Black and white photographic illustration with text lightly browned one small area horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed whereas warns the leaflet Allied soldiers from the US Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown wife of Lt. Col Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified. <br> <br>The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side. . unknown
19424754Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Very good. Pictorial lithograph 20 x 14.25 inches printed in red gray yellow and black. Minor surface wear mild creasing light dust-soiling a few pinholes. A rare poster issued by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs CIAA during World War II attempting to sway public opinion in Latin America to the Allied side. The CIAA was established by executive order in July 1941 in order to distribute news advertising film reels and more to and from Latin America to counter Italian and German propaganda campaigns in the region. The text of the present poster translates from the Spanish as "Freedom of Speech. One of the four freedoms for which the Allies are fighting." The central image features an open-mouthed face breaking open a large swastika which is itself on fire. A mildly subtle message that free speech destroys fascism. The poster was designed by noted Russian-American graphic designer and photographer Alexey Brodovitch whose printed credit appears at top right; Brodovitch is most well-known for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. A powerful visual display with only one copy reported in OCLC at MOMA though we also find two other institutional holdings at the United States Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institute. 16419A5BDK01U79ORome and perhaps elsewhere 1641. Contemporary Italian sheepskin parchment over flexible boards with 0.5 mm flaps on the fore-edge straight-sewn on 4 alum-tawed supports laced through the joints with a hollow back uncoloured linen ties the smooth spine with contemporary manuscript title Africa Greci Italo Greci . at the head and shelfmark CCXXI at the foot plus later paper spine labels including that with the Phillipps manuscripts number 5580. 4to 28.5 x 21 cm. Collection of manuscript transcriptions of about 30 letters and other documents written in brown ink in several hands on about 20 stocks of mostly or entirely Italian laid paper from Catholic missionaries in or writing about Africa Greece Italy Bosnia and Japan. A large collection of about thirty 18th-century transcriptions of letters and other documents from Catholic missionaries writing from or concerning the missions in Africa including Madagascar Algiers and the Barbary Coast Greece Italy including the Mekhitarist Armenian Catholic monastery on the island San Lazzaro degli Armeni in the Venetian lagoon and Japan. The exact number depends how one defines "one" document. Most of the letters transcribed here were originally written at the time of the Portuguese French and Spanish efforts to suppress the Jesuits in their territories both at home and in their colonies beginning around 1750 and leading to the banning of Jesuits from the Portuguese empire 1759 France 1764 and Spain 1767. The Pope finally dissolved the Jesuit order in 1773 but it was re-established in 1814. The documents from this period some explicitly about attempts to suppress the Jesuits were clearly transcribed when they were still new but the collection also includes transcriptions of older letters and documents.Nearly all concern the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide "the department of the pontifical administration charged with the spread of Catholicism and with the regulation of ecclesiastical affairs in non-Catholic countries" Catholic encyclopedia. While the Jesuits prior to their suppression were a highly evangelical branch of the Catholic Church the Propaganda Fide was the papal office that coordinated the missionary activities of all the orders. The letters provide good evidence both of the relations between the Catholic Church as a whole and the Jesuit Order and of the Church's efforts to continue their evangelical missionary activities at a time when the Jesuits were no longer able to lead them. The manuscript belonged to Frederick North 1766-1827 5th Earl of Guilford and was bought for Sir Thomas Phillipps 1792-1872 at the 1830 Guilford sale. It was sold in the 1919 Phillipps sale. In very good condition with a few documents showing minor foxing or small stains but most leaves fine. The binding is somewhat rubbed most of the sewing supports have broken at the joints and the cover has come loose from the bookblock at the inside of the front hinge but the sewing and case remain structurally sound. Many of the 30 documents no doubt transcribe originals that have since been lost so the present collection forms an important source for the history of Catholic missionary work in the period for information about the regions where they operated and for the relations of the Church as a whole with the Jesuits.l Evans Catalogue . manuscripts . The Syriac language bears no relation to modern Syria but is a form of Aramaic spoken by many early Christians in the Middle East and still surviving today. The Propaganda Fide apparently had some of these types cut exclusively for their use and the present publication shows complete alphabets including some variant forms for 6 of the 7 in most cases also with a few words or lines of text it shows only the first half of the alphabet - alaph to kaph - for the very large serto Syriac.
