1918229271918. Nesbit Wilbur D. and Robert Speroy. Let's Keep the Glow in Old Glory And the Free in Freedom Too 1918 documents American patriotic culture during the final year of World War I when popular music functioned as a vehicle for national unity and wartime morale. Issued for domestic performance the piece supports research into American propaganda music history and visual culture demonstrating how commercial sheet music reinforced loyalty to the nation and framed military service as a collective moral obligation. The work situates the American flag as a central symbolic object linking civilian identity to wartime sacrifice and national purpose.

Nesbit Wilbur D. Lyrics. Speroy Robert. Music. Let's Keep the Glow in Old Glory And the Free in Freedom Too. Chicago and New York: McKinley Music Company / Frank K. Root & Co. 1918. Folio. Illustrated sheet music. The cover features an allegorical composition of a woman draped in the American flag holding a child positioned above advancing soldiers with fixed bayonets visually combining maternal imagery with military action. Interior pages present musical notation marked Tempo di Marcia aligning the composition with the rhythm of a military march. Lyrics call for national unity and vigilance with lines invoking "Columbia" and urging preservation of the "Red White and Blue" emphasizing honor sacrifice and global perception of the United States. The structure and presentation reflect the integration of visual symbolism and musical form to convey patriotic messaging to a broad audience in homes and community settings.
Folio format. Illustrated throughout. Moderate edge wear and corner softening light toning across sheets with scattered small stains and minor surface abrasions more visible at margins; interior pages clean and legible with strong notation and text clarity; overall good condition. Produced at a moment when music publishers actively contributed to wartime messaging the sheet provides material evidence of how popular song participated in shaping public sentiment offering value for the study of nationalism propaganda and cultural production in early twentieth-century America. unknown

1942175578Circa1942. Small airborne propaganda leaflet printed on one side only featuring a colour illustration. Appears to have been dropped during the Malayan Campaign. 14.6 x 19.8 cm creased and marked on the reverse. Image still very clear and strong. Airborne colour propaganda leaflet urges the British troops to surrender to Japan. The rather oddly worded text reads:

"Iron-rationed. Stranded.
Nothing but dog biscuits.
Day after day positively.
How about a dish of salad like this
For a change of diet. just a change of mind".

The image shows three figures two of whom are identifiable as British soldiers in a desperate situation on a small piece of land possibly representing Singapore. In the distance their warships are burning. A plate of salad which dominates the image looks enticingly fresh and colourful albeit rather surprising that the Japanese military propaganda believed salad would motivate the soldiers to surrender! Similar messages published and dropped by the Allies were distributed to Japanese troops in Japanese towards the end of the Pacific War with the same aim in mind.

Although we have not been able to identify the area depicted with absolute certainty we believe this leaflet was likely dropped during the Malayan Campaign rather than Guadalcanal as we have seen it attributed to. Our reasons for this include the leaflet showing British soldiers whereas American servicemen were primarily involved in Guadalcanal. The burning ships offshore seem to fit more with the sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse particularly as only two are depicted and they are being destroyed by what seem to be land-based bombers not other ships or carrier-based aircraft. Likewise at the late stage in the Pacific War that the Guadalcanal Campaign took place Japan was no longer in a position where they could cope with POWs nor were they likely to be in a position to print colour leaflets or distribute them.

Commonly airborne leaflets were used over land battles rather than in naval battles. . unknown
1950179481Circa1950. Black and white photographic illustration with text lightly browned one small area horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed whereas warns the leaflet Allied soldiers from the US Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown wife of Lt. Col Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified.

The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side. . unknown

19424754Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Very good. Pictorial lithograph 20 x 14.25 inches printed in red gray yellow and black. Minor surface wear mild creasing light dust-soiling a few pinholes. A rare poster issued by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs CIAA during World War II attempting to sway public opinion in Latin America to the Allied side. The CIAA was established by executive order in July 1941 in order to distribute news advertising film reels and more to and from Latin America to counter Italian and German propaganda campaigns in the region. The text of the present poster translates from the Spanish as "Freedom of Speech. One of the four freedoms for which the Allies are fighting." The central image features an open-mouthed face breaking open a large swastika which is itself on fire. A mildly subtle message that free speech destroys fascism. The poster was designed by noted Russian-American graphic designer and photographer Alexey Brodovitch whose printed credit appears at top right; Brodovitch is most well-known for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. A powerful visual display with only one copy reported in OCLC at MOMA though we also find two other institutional holdings at the United States Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institute.
