197342792n.p. 1973. Small 8vo approx. 8½ x 6 inches in black Flair pen and apparently torn from a notebook; 3 small holes not significantly affecting any legibility otherwise very good. A typically enigmatic inscription: "Proud of you" in a hand-drawn box at the top to the right of which is a small drawing of a face / "You never sniffed drainpipes but you two words crossed out have a good one word crossed out grasp of the alphabet - Highway 51 one word crossed out is not your road!" Signed boldly at the bottom "Bob Dylan / 1973" to the left of which signature is another drawing by Dylan of the rear end of an automobile depicting smoke coming from the tailpipe. Partly drawn from the lyrics of one of his masterpieces Desolation Row: "Einstein disguised as Robin Hood / With his memories in a trunk / Passed this way an hour ago / With his friend a jealous monk / He looked so immaculately frightful / As he bummed a cigarette / Then he went off sniffing drainpipes / And reciting the alphabet."

unknown books

1923007859Washington D.C.: The White House 1923. December 17 1923 The White House - to Lew Wallace Jr. son of Lew Wallace Union general in the American Civil War governor of the New Mexico Territory and author of "Ben Hur"- "Dear Mr. Wallace The growth of thrift and saving in this country promises well for our future. Only through sacrifice and hard work can we attain the cherished things in life. This means we must work and save. The progress of the United States Government Savings System in giving to all our people an opportunity to invest in safe securities is most worthy. By placing Treasury Savings Certyificates on sale in post offices banks and trust companies the Government has made available to everyone a security of unquestioned soundness. Their widespread sale makes for better citizenship as each purchaser holds a stake in his Government. I believe also that the enlargement of a national Thrift movement will eventually stamp out the false and unsound practices of the swindler." A 25 line roughly 225 word letter that in the last paragraph goes on to talk about the growth of this system that "will result in increased happiness for the individual and in increased prosperity in general." A Fine letter under glass in period original frame and acquired directly from descendants of the Wallace family never before offered for sale. A superb association and a letter that speaks directly to Coolidge's sense of personal responsibility and frugality. . One Page. Fine. 8 1/2 " x 11". The White House Paperback books

19587182Iowa 1958. Collection of sixty two vintage black and white or color gelatin silver photographs individually approx. 9 x 12.5 cm. most mounted on eight loose photo pages with handwritten dates to rectos and some with captions on the versos. Age-toning to the color photographs with a few items with corner chips from mounts. Several loose photos and several spaces on the pages where photos appear to have been removed. Still overall very good as a collection. ~ A collection of photographs depicting hamburger stands and luncheonettes between the years 1952 and 1958 taken at the annual Iowa State Fair. Although the food served at each stand varies from hamburgers to fried chicken; each stand has a 7UP logo. These photos were likely taken by a representative of 7UP or someone from the State Fair committee as some of the handwritten captions mention how long the sign was in existence most are dated with the year of the State Fair. A photo caption of the sign for the stand of Christ Church Evangelical United Brethren reads "2nd year for sign"; another of a stand with signs on the front and sides reads "first year for both signs." The color photos have a Kodak stamp on the verso and are mostly taken between 1952 and 1954. While the intention may have been to document the 7UP advertising there is more recorded in the photos as well. The signs announce the offerings of each stand: "Hot Lunches" Fried Chicken" "Good Coffee!" and "Ice Cream Sandwiches" as well as the owner's who appear to be small family or single-owner operations such as Opie's Funroy and Wheeler Graham's CEC & PEG Don's Larsen's Turner's Jean & Shirley the aforementioned Christ Church Evangelical United Brethren and the White Front Café. Some that are not identified by name on the same have a short manuscript note indicating the proprietors. Styles of seating vary with stool low benches or no seating and just a walk up wooden counter. A more official looking business is the State Fair Store housed in a permanent wooden building and offering "Groceries Meats Picnic Supplies". The people of the fair appear in some images either working behind the counter sitting at the stools or benches or just milling about. An interesting collection of 1950s state fair food stands with a tie to the renowned fizzy beverage. unknown books

1928P64651928. Leningrad: Izdanie Gosudarstvennogo Russkogo Muzeia 1928. Octavo 17.5 Ã 13.2 cm. Original decorative wrappers with a constructivist design by M. S. Brodsky; 72 pp. and 14 illustrations in the text some full-page. Very light soil to wrappers; overall a very good copy. First and only edition of this work about the hotly debated topic of "workers' art" and workers' IZO clubs comprised of amateur artists IZO being an abbreviation for Izobrazitel'noe iskusstvo or "Visual Art". The authors set out the history and basic principles of the "workers' art" movement and its connections to avant-garde art. The formation of such amateur groups was part of the push to democratize the Soviet visual arts in the service of mass propaganda and education throughout the 1920s. Under the direction of the artist Moisei Brodsky the disparate IZO clubs were unified under a more coherent program and proceeded to develop new forms for decorative and applied arts agitprop posters and design of new communist interiors "bringing art into life" and "making artists out of workers" two central conceits of the avant-garde. In an introductory essay the art historian Nikolai Punin argues for the regenerative quality of art made by workers with amateur training rather than by trained artists. The artist Vsevolod Voinov follows with a review of the 1925 exhibit of the IZO clubs at the Russian Museum where the works of the amateur artists were exhibited alongside those of the masters. Sergei Isakov traces the history of the movement to 1923 when the creation of such clubs was first proposed. In a longer essay Moisei Brodsky 1896-1944 the leader of the movement and the designer of the constructivist cover -- apparently inspired by Malevich's "Black square" -- discusses the search for "new realism" inherent in workers' art.
Â
The text is supplemented with photographs of the artworks exhibited at the "Iskusstvo rabochkh" Worker's art show at the Russian Museum in 1925 for which 67 IZO clubs listed by name at the end of the text provided over 1000 works. The various posters and design elements for communal cafeterias and worker's clubs are unattributed and the originals of most seem to have been lost making these photographs a rare surviving record of the contents of the show. These designs in their fragmentation of objects collaged quality and use of shadow to create volume show an unmistakable influence of Purism a movement in French painting championed by Le Corbusier among others which advocated for simplicity and precision of forms and a union of the avant-garde art with industry and technology. IZORAM an abbreviation for Izobrazitelnoe iskusstvo rabochei molodezhi or the "Visual Art of the working youth" a more focused group of worker artists was formed by Brodsky in 1928 with another exhibit of workers' art held at the Russian Museum Leningrad and later Tretiakov Gallery Moscow in 1928. The IZORAM exhibit at the Tretiakov Gallery was held at the same time and sold as part of the same ticket as a Malevich exhibit putting the abstract and "functional" avant-garde into conversation. In 1931 IZORAM was dissolved and incorporated into the newly-founded Russian Association of Proletarian Artists RAPKh.
