1883005375Cincinnati Ohio: Not Published 1883. Unique As Issued and framed in period gilt ornamnetal frame under glass. Diploma with original seal and ribbon 18" x 22" in frame 22 1/2" x 26 1/2". Near Fine diploma a bit wavy 1" dia. spot of age toning. Signed by The President and the Secretary of the college along with the signatures of 10 Professors from the faculty. Dr Joseph Bowlby was born 17 Feb. 1854 in Rush County Indiana and died 28 June 1906 in Shelbyville Indiana. His practice was in Shelby County and Shelbyville Indiana from his graduation until his death. He served as President of the Homestead Building and Loan Association was a Presbyterian a Mason and a Republican. The Ohio College of Medicine located in Cincinnati was active from 1819 until 1896 when it merged with the Dept. of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Text of the diploma in Latin printed by Strobridge & Co. Lithographers of Cincinnati. A quite unique piece of medical Indiana and Ohio history. Of the 14 pieces of printing identified by Martin in her Checklist of Minnesota Imprints 1849-1865 only two items Martin 6 and 8 broadside proclamations by territorial governor Ramsey bear an earlier date on the title-p. and one other Rules for the Government of the House of Representatives bears the same date. Includes standing rules for the legislative council rules of order and procedure of the two Houses and a list of the standing committees of the Council and joint committees of the House of Representatives. Rare. 100 copies were ordered printed. Martin 11 MHS only. Jerabek 66 identifying this as the first publication of the territorial legislature. Printed in New York by Daniel Ader 211 Center St. A wonderful little early guide to the city of what is now collectively Minneapolis touting the business climate and commercial opportunities quality of education future prospects etc. together with a historical sketch of the metropolis. The publisher William Wales was the first Quaker to settle in Minnesota and induced others of the sect to emigrate here. He was active in the Quaker community and was a bookseller and stationer in St. Anthony. Thomas Hale Williams also of Minneapolis was the founder of the Minneapolis Athenaeum in 1859 "which finally became part of the Minneapolis Public Library where he served twenty years as librarian treasurer and director without compensation. The panorama extends to a total length of 30 feet 15 feet for each side of the avenue; each building is identified in the margins and the bustle of everyday city life is captured in the many people horses carriages etc. depicted throughout. I would not stay here were it not for making money. This country has many failings which are great detriments to it. Timber is very scarce and in some parts the soil is not good. A large portion of the land about this place is land that won't wear long. I think the best portion of this country is on Lake Superior.
