Lundy a Cincinnati carpenter bridge builder and locomotive fireman "he ran the first engine of the Cincinnati Southern that crossed the new Southern bridge over the Ohio" notes his entry in the 1894 "History of Cincinnati and Hamilton County Ohio" -- later a respected attorney. 23936N.p. Springfield: Illinois Commission 1964. Broadside. Folio 30" X 23". Fine. Superb broadside printing of the Gettysburg Address created specifically for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Below the large headline in deep blue this typographically interesting piece depicts the Illinois State Historical Society's holograph version of Lincoln's masterpiece at center at actual size in deep purple. To the left of this facsimile the same text appears in four languages each printed in a different color: Hebrew deep purple Japanese blue Greek green and French red. To the right of the facsimile the text appears in another four languages again with each printed in a different color: German blue Spanish green Russian deep purple and Latin red. Ralph G. Newman founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop was a member of the Illinois Civil War Centennial Commission and was no doubt instrumental in having this piece created. Interest in all things Lincoln and Civil War was high at this centennial time and the New York World's Fair held a special Illinois Day as well. Walt Disney's famed Abraham Lincoln talking robot was debuted at this same World's Fair. The broadside was designed by Carl Regehr and printed by Gregg-Moore Lithographing Company. It is in exceptionally bright fresh condition. unknown

27617Hand-colored steel-engraved newspaper print ca. 10" X 8" image size 9" X 7" n.p. n.y. 1853 or 1854. Near fine. A clean and attractive example of this charming scene of the tiny west central Illinois city associated with Joseph Smith and the Mormons before their westward flight. No artist's or engravers name appears in the margins. This image first appeared in the July 8 1853 issue of the "New-York Illustrated News" then on July 22 1854 the identical image was published in "Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion" in Boston. This particular example has been simply and tastefully hand colored and is framed under a single cream matte in a modern 3/4" wood frame all archival and quite handsome -- overall dimensions 15" X 13". Removal from the framing would of course allow determination which printing this is based on the typeset text on verso but the engraving plate is identical in either case. A beautiful example of this memorable early image of the famed Mormon site elegantly presented. unknown

Book has 163 original photographs and 160 autographs. 3 photographs of Edmund Pitts R. E. Fenton and Stewart Woodford are oval cameos 5x7 inches. Remaining 160 photos are 2x4 inches. All but 3 photographs are autographed most giving town of residence also. Six of the photos are of journalists eg Alex Wilder of Evening Post; J. M. Connell of NY Tribune and T. Conney of NY Herald. Several clerks a stenographer several sargents-at-arms etc. are also pictured and have autographs. Photographs are presented in alphabetical order and include men from many famous NY families as George Batcheller C. H. Young L. W. Fiske Underwood Wyeth Irving Hunt Buckley and Archer. Photographs are VG three photos have dime size spots below portrait so no loss Album is 3/4 leather with cloth-covered boards. Album condition is Fair with hinges cracking cloth worn and stained lower 2 inches of backstrip gone. Some ink spots and light soiling and foxing in margins on most pages. Together five reports plus three miscellaneous government documents concerning the sovereignty of South Carolina 1833 and the other referencing the banking system. Thick 8vo. 240 x 150 mm. 9 ½ x 6 inches. Contemporary calf spine and tips over marbled paper boards title 'Reports on N.Y. Com. Schools' gilt on spine; joints cracked yet sound. These Reports provide an overview of the Common Schools of New York county by county and subdivided by city and towns. The Reports included tables showing the operations of each system and provide statistics to numerous questions documenting the annual cost of operation associated with each school district. The miscellaneous report titled government document No. 34 In Senate January 29 1833 was produced by the New York State Senate and is thorough discussion of the debate over 'states rights' and the relationship of the Federal Constitution to constitutions of sovereign states. Softcover self-wraps. 3 pages with the banner title printed at the head of the first page. The pages are toned and slightly creased along the corners. The edges are darkened and foxed. Good. <p>The text following the banner title reads: "Fellow citizens We want your aid in a great work. Not your money nor your time nor the sacrifice of any real interest. We want your names with the pledge and the influence which is attached to them." Stated on page three is the declaration that "It is proposed to place a copy of this circular in the hands of every family in the state." In conclusion the circular closes with a "Pledge" with blank spaces for the town and county followed by substantial space for signatures.<p>The publication date is derived from internal evidence. The circular lists statistics from the city of Albany which match state records for that date.
