First edition of this brief legislative act 28th Congress 2d Session resolving "re-annexation of Texas to the United States" and " the recognition of the independence of Texas by the principal Governments of the world and the successful maintenance of a national existence for nearly nine years without any serious attempt at subjugation on the part of Mexico are sufficient considerations to entitle her to be regarded in all respects as a sovereign and independent nation capable of making treaties and forming alliances" and "the pretensions of Mexico to interfere in any arrangement between the United States and the Republic of Texas cannot be sustained on any principle of propriety or justice." Signed in type by W.P. Richardson as Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives and by John Moore as Speaker of the Illinois Senate. Ordered to be printed on March 3 1845 -- the last day in session of the 28th Congress. Interesting recording in the U.S. Congress of this state's resolution on this national issue. The edges of the cover leaves are chipped with loss to the corners and a small hole at the top. The rear cover leaf is stained. 58 pages. The edges of the pages are chipped with pieces out from the corners. An early owner's name is penned on the cover page. A fair complete copy of the proposed constitution of the State of New York.</p><p>A working draft of New York's Constitution which called for a ban on "cruel and unusual punishment": "Section 5. Excessive bail shall not be required nor excessive fines imposed nor shall cruel and unusual punishment be inflicted nor shall witnesses be unreasonably detained."</p><p>This draft includes "An amendment in relation to the equal suffrage of colored persons separate from those incorporated in the engrossed constitution is also submitted to be voted upon at the same time with a separate ballot which is to be deposited in a separate box." The constitution was submitted for a vote in November 1846 with a separate ballot granting suffrage to African-Americans submitted separately. Although the constitution was approved the ballot granting "equal suffrage of colored people" was rejected. African American men did not achieve equal voting rights in New York until 1870.</p> 1846. paperback

Graff's "The Westerners Go Overland; Retread the Various Routes to California" Albert S. Johannsen's "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" Clarence S. Paine's "She Laid Her Pistol Down; or The Last Will and Testament of Calamity Jane" and Don Russell's "Jesse James -- Postwar Bandit." Tipped to the front flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from contributor Don Russell 2pp 7¼" X 10½" Elmhurst IL 29 March 1956. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On Chicago letterhead of "The American Peoples Encyclopedia" where Russell served as assistant editor Russell cordially agrees to review books for the "Lincoln Herald" column that Gates headed for many years -- but declines to increase his reviewing for "Unhappily I have a somewhat similar job for The Westerners Brand book which has kept me loaded down too long and then I was so foolish as to take on the job of being judge for the best non-fiction book of last year for the Western Writers of America. I thought I probably had read all the books that would be on their list but they have rung in 7 or 8 on me." Boldly signed in full in black ink at the conclusion. Russell 1899-1989 was a Chicago journalist and newspaper editor and Western historian author of the 1960 "The Lives and Legends of Buffalo Bill." Appropriate brand-like ownership inkstamp of L.H.
