First edition; 6 1/4 x 4 3/4; pp. 9 8-35 1; brown wraps printed in black; a few small spots to margins of front wrap and a minor puncture to back wrap; a small nick to tail of spine and light wear to edges and corners; overall in very good condition. William Pryor Letchworth 1823 - 1910 was a businessman and a philanthropist renwoned for his charitable actions. He was very successful in the "malleable iron" business but he also took very seriously his work for the New York State Board of Charities first appointed to it in 1873 and later serving as its President from 1878 until 1897. He was credited with managing to inspect every alms house orphanage poor-house and juvenile reformatory in the state and recommending and implementing various improvements including the removal of all children under the age of 2 from such institutions and co-founding the Craig Colony - a state epileptic hospital. The booklet contained his lengthy address delivered at the 1884 National Conference of Charities and Correction which touched on the subjects of women and children under institutional custody juvenile offenders treatments for the insane financial accounting of various boards etc. Matthews, Northrup & Co. hardcover books

"The book is the work of Henry Lewis an American artist then living in Germany; originally written in English Lewis' text was translated into German by one George B. Douglas. The first 72-pp. of an English edition are known but only discovered in 1951. The present volume reproduces that English fragment but the bulk of it is a retranslation from the German version." SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at front end page - "The great 'Beyond' and other places South of Hoboken- Beer and Skittles Alan Innes-Taylor" and "From one deep-sea diver to another Charles L. Kessler" and additionally SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at half-title page -"The top of the world with City of New York Wm. W. Darling" along with rubber-stamped "Byrd's South Pole Ship / A Century of Progress / 1933". The author lists Kessler as seaman and helmsman Innes-Taylor as dog-man and chief in handling and attending to the health and well-being of the sled dogs. Darling is described as a fireman and a hard worker and "The City of New York" was Byrd's flagship for the expedition. A great ASSOCIATION COPY given the personalization of the inscriptions seemingly presented to a fellow expedition member who almost certainly is Dr. Dana Coman medical director on the expedition as this title came with 2 other titles definitely from Coman's collection. The book is Very Good in the original green cloth stamped in gilt front board and spine with faint image of ship stamped front board and a penguin to spine illustrated with black and white photos. . A few marginal marks and notations in ink most notably at Coman's bio p. 229 where the notation reads "Oh ! that there were more poets in this funny old world". With two parts of the dust wrapper laid in comprising most of the front wrapper and roughly half of the rear hence wrapper is Good only. . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED. First Edition. Cloth. Washington state newspaper issue reporting on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The interior two pages are both column-edged in black the lead headline reading: "President Lincoln Murdered!! Mr. Seward Stabbed." The newspaper likewise reports on the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomattox and the end of the Civil War. The issue for April 1st reports a small column on the unconstitutionality of the Emancipation Proclamation. This copy additionally inscribed to "Lucile Wright from the Royal Swedish Aero Club in appreciation of her contribution to aviation. Stockholm 6.9.1957 Nils Stirnberg." Lucile M. Wright was a famous American woman aviator one of the original Ninety-Nines pioneer women aviatrixes as assembled by Amelia Earhart in 1929 and the Lucile M. Wright Air Museum in Jamestown New York is named after her. This book an account of the first solo nonstop flight between the United States and Europe in 1927 won for Lindbergh the 1954 Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography. Hays to his son Billie Will Jr. with full page SIGNED INSCRIPTION front endpage dated 2/7/26 - "Dear Billie There is not much in this book you need to read now. Later on maybe. Its like life itself- there is much very wholesome and some to be taken in moderation and only at certain times. However I want you to read pages 187 to 206 especially about Aunt Sallie on page 189. Show it to her too and if she would like one of the books I'll get you one to give her. She is a great individual. Affectionately W.H.H.". Pages 187- 206 contain the chapter written by Will H. Hays and is titled "I Learned a Lot from the Folks Back Home". He was wrong about the citation it begins on page 199. Will Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies Hays installed a more formal production code called the Hays Code later simply "The Code" which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. The Civilian Conservation Corp was established by Congress March 31 1933 as part of Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal as a way to provide jobs for young unemployed men during the Great Depression.
