First editions. <br /><br />Though perhaps best remembered as an organization for not having seated Susan B. Anthony Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Amelia Bloomer as delegates in 1852 this led to the formation of the Woman's New York State Temperance Society these early almanacs from the New-York Society include dramatic woodcut propaganda illustrations ranging from vignettes illustrating stories to dramatic large wood-engraved illustrations like the Temperance Tree or a fine allegorical map showing the Continent of Poverty and the Continent of Plenty separated by the Ocean of Intemperance—watered by the Lake of Animal Appetite—and the Sea of Temperance the latter continent boasting a thriving City of Sobriety on the banks of the Lake of Self-Denial. <br /><br />Drake 7330 1834; 7456 1836; 7528 1837; 7597 1838; 1835 almanac not found in Drake. <br /><br />One leaf torn with a little loss to the astronomical tables for May and June in the 1834 almanac. 1836 almanac browned and a bit stained with a few short tears. 1837 almanac a little split along the spine. The end sheets are printed with a map of southern New Jersey. Without it issued dust jacket. A small 4to measuring 9 1/8 by 6 inches. The author recounts her experiences on an extended Raymong and Whitcomb tour which took her across the country from Boston to California and back again. Includes chapters on Pasadena Los Angeles Santa Barbara Riverside San Diego Sonoma County and Santa Cruz and two chapters on Yosemite. She visited Salt Lake City on the return trip. Flake 2398 describes the relevant section of her book thus: "A visit to Utah after 'polygamy was dead.' She attends a meeting at the Mormon tabernacle."
