From the Preface: "We present to our patrons a new City Directory satisfied that it is as nearly correct as a thorough and systematic canvass could make it. In the Business Directory all business firms we think are correctly represented classified according to the business pursuits and arranged in alphabetic order. The Appendix shows the different Associations Public Buildings Libraries Ward Boundaries Streets . Municipal Organizations etc. In the Spring of 1864 we propose to publish another Directory which we presume will receive the same liberal support." Bailey joined forces with one Groff to publish the 1864 edition after which no more were published in St. Paul. Prior to his coming to Saint Paul Bailey published directories in Quincy Illinois in 1861; and in 1862 he published one for Burlington Iowa. Subsequently he published directories for Winona Minnesota; La Crosse Wisconsin; Milwaukee; Mansfield Ohio; and Cleveland. Martin Minnesota Imprints 521; not in Sabin or Howes.
