Five sepia toned original photographic postcards of the Bennett College for Girls in Millbank Dutchess County New York a school founded in 1890 in Irvington New York which moved to this location in 1907. Its main building Halcyon Hall was built in 1893 by H. J. Davison Jr. a publisher from New York. Designed by James A. Ware it was meant to be a luxury hotel but the hotel never caught on. It served as a school into the late1970's and today lies in a state of disrepair. Near Fine the cards curled. Four of the cards are 9 1/2" w x 3 1/2" h the last 8 3/4" w x 3 1/2" h. . Postcard. Kidwell photographic studio Syracuse Hamilton County Kansas. Sent from Syracuse Kansas by Robert Popkins to his parents Sept. 20 and to his brother Chas. Aug. 7 both living in Halstead Kansas. The cards titled No. 1 View of Syracuse and New Steel Bridge Syracuse Kans. In the message to his brother Robert describes a 2 1/2 hour trip with his mulke team "down to Syracuse" "had a runaway and then made them travel the rest of the way." He also mentions "it is still windy out here and the dust blows a fright". The one to his parents mentions "stayed all night in Bucklin and came to Dodge this morn. Caught No.9 here will see my Co. Supt. and then catch the 567 to Holly." He ends by saying "tell Everett there is no school in Kiowa Co." Both Very Good the written sides with some toning. SCARCE. . Postcard. 19245Undated and uncredited albumen photograph image size 4.75" x 7.75" identified in a handwritten caption on the mount as Forest City a town in Sierra County California where gold was discovered in 1852. Slight fading and spotting crack in the glass negative appearing in lower left but still a clear image of the town; very good overall. By 1854 the town boasted a population of about 1000 and was home to five hotels a school a restaurant two stables two meat markets six carpentry shops four blacksmiths four clothing stores several general stores and of course many saloons. A telegraph line reached the town in 1855. Forest City suffered several devastating fires over the years with the worst one occurring in 1883. Although efforts were made to rebuild most of the mines had dried up and the town's population began a steady decline. Today it is a ghost town. Early images showing the still-prospering town are quite scarce. unknown books

A collection of recipes in two volumes collected in fourteen sections most likely issued individually: Sandwiches Salads Breads Deserts Cakes Cookies & Frostings Soups Meat & Poultry Meat Extensions Meatless and Fish Recipes Meat Substitutes Dressings Relishes and Sauces Vegetables. Recipes appear to be assembled for a specific course as each section contains a unique identification code most likely a course number. Recipes are large-scale serving between twenty-five and fifty-five and contain remarks on garnishing possible variations cost and size of serving specifically which size ladle/dipper to use in addition to the ingredient list and instructions. New York State College of Home Economics had its early beginnings in 1900 when Martha Van Rensselaer arrived at Cornell to organize a reading course for farmers' wives and evolved into a fully accredited program of home economics. In 1923 the League of Women Voters named Van Renssleaer one of the twelve greatest women in the country. These volumes belonged to Mary Louise Van Allen née Alstein Class of 1950. Mimeographed recipes are bound with colored tab dividers separating each section. In blue cloth with gold titles stamped to spines and the owner's name to lower right corner of the covers. Some rubbing and edgewear to both volumes volume one has staining/discoloration to front cover. With some very slight food stains to interior and creasing to tabbed dividers otherwise very good. Owner's name Mary Louise Van Allen inscribed on prelims and her initials appear sporadically throughout the text. OCLC records various copies of a commercially printed version of this work or a similar work printed in the 1950s and 60s but no copies of this earlier mimeographed printing.
