The aim of the 1948 Act was to extend National Service (instituted in the 1939 Act at the outbreak of WWII) to post-war Britain, since it was felt that the uncertainties of the post-war world called for armed services larger than could be achieved by means of the usual volunteer recruitment. In the event, National Service continued right through to the Swinging Sixties, having a profound effect on social culture and attitudes. The last call-ups entered in November 1960.
