1901ST19567-099London: MacMillan and Co. Limited 1901. Fourth Edition. 220 x 140 mm. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2". viii 510 pp.
Very pleasing deep brown pebble-grained morocco by Bumpus signed on the front turn-in covers ruled in gilt and black with scrolling fleuron cornerpieces raised bands spine with compartments outlined in black and gilt gilt-ruled turn-ins all edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Cromwell after the painting by Samuel Cooper. Spine very slightly sunned the frontispiece and half title with minor foxing but an extremely pleasing copy the text very clean and fresh and the attractive binding lustrous and showing virtually no signs of use.

First published in 1900 this is an important biography of one of the most controversial of English leaders written by the universally respected British Liberal statesman writer and newspaper editor John Morley 1838-1923. Composed after very considerable research and with great care Morley's work expands upon the biographies of C. H. Firth and Samuel Rawson Gardiner but with a somewhat more disparaging lens. It is generally sympathetic but critics of the account suggest that Morley's own political concerns at a vexing time in British politics seem to color his portrait of Cromwell in a negative way that is unwarranted. The book was first published in October of 1900 and this the fourth edition was released in January of the following year. Our copy is a particularly attractive one in an elegant yet restrained binding by the distinguished Bumpus bindery. MacMillan and Co., Limited unknown

In 1909 after then-Senator Joseph Foraker had advocated on behalf of the soldiers involved in the Brownsville Affair a ceremony was held in his honor at the A.M.E. Church in Washington D.C. in Foraker’s honor in which he was presented with a Loving Cup by a group that included Archibald Grimke and John Wesley Cromwell. Offered here is the program from the evening which reproduces the speeches of Cromwell Grimke and Foraker in their entirety. A leading writer of the Victorian era he exerted a profound influence on 19th-century art literature and philosophy. Born of peasant parents in Ecclefechan Dumfriesshire Carlyle attended the University of Edinburgh where he excelled in mathematics inventing the Carlyle circle. After finishing the arts course he prepared to become a minister in the Burgher Church while working as a schoolmaster. He quit these and several other endeavours before settling on literature writing for the Edinburgh Encyclopædia and working as a translator. He found initial success as a disseminator of German literature then little-known to English readers through his translations his Life of Friedrich Schiller 1825 and his review essays for various journals. His first major work was a novel entitled Sartor Resartus 183334. After relocating to London he became famous with his French Revolution 1837 which prompted the collection and reissue of his essays as Miscellanies. Each of his subsequent works from On Heroes 1841 to History of Frederick the Great 185865 and beyond were highly regarded throughout Europe and North America. He founded the London Library contributed significantly to the creation of the National Portrait Galleries in London and Scotland was elected Lord Rector of Edinburgh University in 1865 and received the Pour le Mérite in 1874 among other honours. Carlyle's corpus spans the genres of history the critical essay social commentary biography fiction and poetry. His innovative writing style known as Carlylese greatly influenced Victorian literature and anticipated techniques of postmodern literature. While not adhering to any formal religion he asserted the importance of belief and developed his own philosophy of religion. He preached "Natural Supernaturalism" the idea that all things are "Clothes" which at once reveal and conceal the divine that "a mystic bond of brotherhood makes all men one" and that duty work and silence are essential. He postulated the Great Man theory a philosophy of history which contends that history is shaped by exceptional individuals. He viewed history as a "Prophetic Manuscript" that progresses on a cyclical basis analogous to the phoenix and the seasons. Raising the "Condition-of-England Question" to address the impact of the Industrial Revolution his political philosophy is characterised by medievalism advocating a "noble Chivalry of Work" led by "Captains of Industry". He attacked utilitarianism as mere atheism and egoism criticised laissez-faire political economy as the "Dismal Science" and rebuked "big black Democracy" while championing "Heroarchy Government of Heroes". Carlyle occupied a central position in Victorian culture being considered not only in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson the "undoubted head of English letters" but a secular prophet. Posthumously his reputation suffered as publications by his friend and disciple James Anthony Froude provoked controversy about Carlyle's personal life particularly his marriage to Jane Welsh Carlyle. His reputation further declined in the 20th century as the onsets of World War I and World War II brought forth accusations that he was a progenitor of both Prussianism and fascism. Since the 1950s extensive scholarship in the field of Carlyle Studies has improved his standing and he is now recognized as "one of the enduring monuments of our literature who quite simply cannot be spared." Thomas Cromwell 1792-1870 worked for Longman the publisher before becoming a unitarian minister. He was an enthusiastic antiquary and besides several other works wrote the text to accompany the engraved views for the series Excursions through England and Wales Scotland Ireland.

The Excursions through Ireland was planned as a 12 volume work to be published in monthly numbers which was to cover the entire island and to contain 600 engravings later reduced to 400. In the event interest was insufficient and after two volumes had been published the work began to experience difficulties although it did struggle on to complete a third volume with a reduced complement of plates before collapsing.

The scope and method of the work is described on the wrappers of the parts. It notices that most works on Ireland had dealt both in text and illustration with a restricted highly repetitive range of places mainly the principal towns and cities. "A work like the present therefore comprising the topography statistics history and antiquities of the whole country has become imperatively necessary. The editor will be an actual visitant to every place he describes; and his manuscript will be submitted to the inspection of gentlemen whose local knowledge as residents and antiquaries is indisputable previously to its issuing from the press. It should be noticed also that the work will by no means be found a dry detail of sites buildings ruins agricultural produce &c; but that it will be the editor's chief endeavour to render it an image of the country and the people it portrays - luxuriant wild original and interesting - all in no common degree"

The first volume focuses on Dublin city and the second explores the villages and towns of Cos. Dublin Louth Meath Westmeath Kildare and Longford. Each volume has its own separate detailed index.

The plates softly executed line engravings mainly after drawings by the distinguished Irish antiquarian and artist George Petrie provide particularly in the proof state in these volumes an excellent view of the contemporary landscape villages antiquities bridges &c.
