Beautifully clean and crisp throughout. 112 pp. collated and complete. Leaves 86 and 87 remain sealed together along a small section of fore edge noted on collation. The volume details reports from Parliament in April 1657 during the Protectorate debating whether the Lord Protector Cromwell was to take the title of King and records the speeches arguing that he should take the crown as part of a revised constitution. It includes speeches from Cromwell. His final speech ends 'That I cannot undertake this Government with the Title of a King and that is mine answer to this great and weighty business'. Edited by Nathaniel Fiennes or by Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke both supporters of Oliver Cromwell. The names of the members of the Committee are enclosed in brackets on the title page. The preface 'To the reader' is signed. 'By a lover of his King and Countrey'. Otherwise text clean and complete binding tight and attractive. <br /> <br /> First edition of this important early biography of Cromwell offering a relatively sympathetic account of his military and civil career issued in the year of the Stuart Restoration. This work has been attributed to Henry Fletcher and William Raybould the publishers. There was a second edition in 1680 but the first remains quite scarce in the trade. <br /> <br /> ESTC R18473.
