1901ST19567-099London: MacMillan and Co. Limited 1901. Fourth Edition. 220 x 140 mm. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2". viii 510 pp. <br/> Very pleasing deep brown pebble-grained morocco by Bumpus signed on the front turn-in covers ruled in gilt and black with scrolling fleuron cornerpieces raised bands spine with compartments outlined in black and gilt gilt-ruled turn-ins all edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Cromwell after the painting by Samuel Cooper. Spine very slightly sunned the frontispiece and half title with minor foxing but an extremely pleasing copy the text very clean and fresh and the attractive binding lustrous and showing virtually no signs of use.<br/> <br/> First published in 1900 this is an important biography of one of the most controversial of English leaders written by the universally respected British Liberal statesman writer and newspaper editor John Morley 1838-1923. Composed after very considerable research and with great care Morley's work expands upon the biographies of C. H. Firth and Samuel Rawson Gardiner but with a somewhat more disparaging lens. It is generally sympathetic but critics of the account suggest that Morley's own political concerns at a vexing time in British politics seem to color his portrait of Cromwell in a negative way that is unwarranted. The book was first published in October of 1900 and this the fourth edition was released in January of the following year. Our copy is a particularly attractive one in an elegant yet restrained binding by the distinguished Bumpus bindery. MacMillan and Co., Limited unknown
165722250London: John Field 1657. Hardcover. Very good. Three Acts bound as one in 19th century paper over boards leather label gilt. Fine copies; the the binding is worn at the upper hinge else is in very good condition.<br /> <p><br /> The first Act banned public practice of Catholicism Catholic priests were killed when captured; Catholic-owned land was confiscated and given to Scottish and English settlers and Catholic landowners were relocated to Connacht. Hence the expression attributed to Cromwell: To Connacht or to Hell.<br /> <p><br /> The second Act set forth procedures for soldiers and officers who served in Ireland to recover a "great Arrears of pay". The third Act assessed Ireland the sum of £20000 for support of the Spanish War to be levied and paid "in such manner and form as by the Lord Deputy and Council or any three or more of them shall be Ordered and Directed."<br /> <p><br /> Rare<br /> <p>. 1820C218619London: Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown 1820. Hardcover Hardcover. Good. Octavo. 140pp. Bound in contemporary half leather over marbled boards with gilt spine titles. Front board detached slight wear and foxing otherwise very good. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, hardcover
182278891London: Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown 1822. First Edition. Hardcover Half Leather. Good Condition. This copy is in brown calf leather with marbled boards both boards and leather are scuffed and rubbed but it presents very nicely nonetheless. There is a repair to the interior front hinge rather too strongly done so the endpaper and board stick together too much and pull a little when opening. That said it's solid. The book is largely clean and bright inside with some foxing and offsetting around the engraved plates. The folding map and the plan of Chichester are still present. Size: Octavo standard book size. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Genealogy & Local History; Inventory No: 78891. . Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown hardcover

18911London: Printed by William du-Gard and Henry Hills Printers to His Highness the Lord Protector. MDCLIII 1653. title continued "As it was publickly declared at Westminster the 16. day of December 1653 . . . OLIVER LORD PROTECTOR of the said Common-wealth took a Solemn Oath for observing the same." Wing CD-ROM 1996 G1456F ; Thomason E.10635 Signatures: E2 F-L² chi¹. Issued separately and possibly also as part of a through-paged set. The last leaf bears "The oath taken by His Highness Oliver Cromwel Lord Protector" signed printed: O. Cromwell. Pp.2 21-46 modern rebinding marbled boards title on spine in red and gold quarter leather tract marked and stained throughout mainly title but text clear and complete. The number "26" has been scrawled on the title. Many institutions in UK and USA have copies but I have found no auction or catalogue reference suggesting great scarcity. This view is supported by the instigator Robert Amadeus Baron Heath of a facsimile edition for the Philobiblon Society "Reprinted in fac-simile for Private Circulation 16th May 1867" in an unknown number of copies. In an autograph letter enclosed in my copy he says "I possess what I believe to be the only copy of the original"!. Note: The importance of the text is indicated by its appearance in "The Making of the Modern World: The Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature 1450-1850". Locke uses the title phrase in his "Second Treatise" e.g. "Whoever therefore from thenceforth by inheritance purchase permission or otherways enjoys any part of the land so annexed to and under the government of that common-wealth must take it with the condition it is under; that is of submitting to the government of the common-wealth under whose jurisdiction it is as far forth as any subject of it." And Hobbes's "Leviathan". London: Printed, by William du-Gard, and Henry Hills, Printers to His Highness the Lord Protector. MDCLIII (1653). hardcover

One of their agents Harriet Jacobs wrote her own letter documenting what she saw in Alexandria and Washington D.C. 1909List01125Washington: Murray Brothers 1909. 8vo wraps 25 pp. Disbound with wraps present good condition overall. Good. In 1909 after then-Senator Joseph Foraker had advocated on behalf of the soldiers involved in the Brownsville Affair a ceremony was held in his honor at the A.M.E. Church in Washington D.C. in Foraker’s honor in which he was presented with a Loving Cup by a group that included Archibald Grimke and John Wesley Cromwell. Offered here is the program from the evening which reproduces the speeches of Cromwell Grimke and Foraker in their entirety. Foraker had been portrayed by some as trying to collect African-American votes through his advocacy regarding the Brownsville case. In his speech he says “I probably ought to say in justice to myself that I never had a selfish thought in regard to that matter.†Four copies held institutionally. Murray Brothers unknown
