The text preserves contemporary accounts of numerous historic Essex landmarks including Maldon Chelmsford Colchester Barking Abbey and the priory at Tiptree alongside descriptions of seats belonging to the county"s nobility and gentry. Externally very smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. Slight rubbing to boards. Hinges strained with slight chipping to endpapers at gutter but firm. Internally firmly bound. 18583287Seaforth and Hanover: Unpublished manuscript book 1858. Hardcover. Good. ff 25 Oblong album missing rear cover with the calligraphic ownership inscription on behalf of ten year old Cromwell Stuart son of Peter Stuart of Seaforth north of Liverpool the Lancashire shipowner and lay homeopath. Cromwell Stuart was born in 1847 dying in South Africa at 22 with most of the inscribed pages dating from about a decade later. Presumably this was a gift from his parents which Peter took with him to Germany where most of the inscribed pages were undertaken usually offering a motto and inscription below sometimes with a drawing. Signers include Jose Francis da Sehra G J F Bruel Albert Knolcke Rothmeyer Ernst Sengstack August von Bothmer Louise Evers Magnus Mansfeldt F F Vollmer Marie Hogreive. This copy is in brown calf leather with marbled boards both boards and leather are scuffed and rubbed but it presents very nicely nonetheless. There is a repair to the interior front hinge rather too strongly done so the endpaper and board stick together too much and pull a little when opening. That said it's solid. The book is largely clean and bright inside with some foxing and offsetting around the engraved plates. The folding map and the plan of Chichester are still present. Size: Octavo standard book size.
