br. La Conferenza di Yalta (4-11 febbraio 1945) è stata uno degli avvenimenti politici più significativi del XX secolo. In quegli otto giorni Roosevelt, Stalin e Churchill si confrontarono per definire diverse questioni di cruciale importanza tra cui la fondazione delle Nazioni Unite, la nuova configurazione della Polonia, il regime di occupazione della Germania, la questione delle riparazioni, le relazioni con la "nuova" Francia di de Gaulle, la partecipazione sovietica alla guerra contro il Giappone, la rinascita democratica dell'Europa. Essa fu una vera e propria pre-conferenza della pace. In quelle giornate non avvenne una "spartizione" dell'Europa, come spesso è stato detto, ma furono raggiunti una serie di compromessi che avrebbero dovuto dar vita a un nuovo sistema internazionale imperniato sul multilateralismo e i princìpi della Carta Atlantica. La successiva Guerra fredda non fu causata dagli accordi che furono presi a Yalta, ma dal mancato rispetto del loro contenuto.
