180319534New-York: Printed by George F. Hopkins at Washington's-Head 1803. First edition. Traces of the old calf spine. Somewhat soiled stained and a bit foxed; a very good copy. Removed pamphlet 8.25 x 5 inches 56 pages. The Anglo-Irish soldier-turned-revolutionary Despard had been the colonial administrator of the British Honduras from 1786 until 1790 when he returned to Britain with his African-Caribbean wife Catherine; once home "In pursuit of compensation he grew increasingly irascible while the combination of enforced idleness and grievance against authority led him to both the London Corresponding Society and the overtly revolutionary United Irishmen. . . . He quickly became an intimate of the leading United Irishman and French secret agent William Duckett and in 1797 was reported to be co-ordinator of a proposed rising in London planned to coincide with one in Ireland and a French landing there. In 1798 Despard was pivotal in negotiations between the United Irishmen and a broader conspiratorial group the United Britons to foment simultaneous English and Irish risings to assist a French invasion. When O'Connor and O'Coighley the principal leaders of the conspiracy were apprehended in February while hiring a boat to take them to France habeas corpus was suspended and further arrests followed. Despard's was predictably among them" OUDNB. Despard was eventually released but taken up again on suspicion of plotting a coup in conjunction with the opening of Parliament and executed. This extensive account of Despard's trial does not appear to be taken from Gurney's separately-published London edition; whether there was a separate London edition in addition to the Morning Chronicle account is not entirely clear. Sm. folio, 3 leaves, BLACK-LETTER throughout, with fine woodblock arms of William III on front cover and woodblock illuminated capital on first page of text; disbound, uncut, a remarkably crisp, clean copy. 8 Gulielmi III.The death of Queen Mary in 1695 isolated William as an object of Jacobite hatred; the motive for his assassination being the stronger since his death would no longer leave her in occupation of the throne. In February James II moved to Calais and the Jacobite conspirators moved to action. As William drove home to Kensington Palace from his weekly outing in Richmond Park he had to pass along a narrow and muddy lane near Turnham Green. Here he was to be surrounded and murdered. This was the most serious of the several plots against him, but the plotters' security was lax and on 24 February William announced in parliament knowledge both of the plan and of the proposed invasion from France.This act arraigns Sir George Barclay and a number of lesser Jacobites including Johnson alias Harrison, Durant alias Durance, Michael Hare, Major George Holmes, Philip Hanford alias Browne, Richard Richardson, John Maxwell, Bryerly, Plowden and Hungate.Conspirators already languishing in Newgate are named as Counter, [Major ] John Bernardi, Robert Cassells, Robert Meldrum, James Chambers and Robert Blackbourne.

Edinburgh: Printed in the Year 1713. 3 pamphlets bound together in 20th-century yellow-glazed textured paper boards backed in paler glazed paper spine and front board lettered in ink. Some scattered toning and soiling. Boards a little marked. Folded typewritten fragment of a letter dated 10.3.63 loosely inserted. A scarce pamphlet advocating an armed citizenry against the tyranny of the state in rather florid prose bound with two further anonymous pamphlets with broadly anti-Hanovarian sentiment. The Appeal is recorded in just 5 locations by ESTC: BL NLS and Oxford in the UK and Folger and California in North America. The letter fragment from a previous owner included describes its publication as ‘unquestionably an act of high treason’ adding ‘but I suppose the author was never discovered’. Certainly none of the listed holdings venture an attribution and the printing itself is anonymous with no tell-tale printers’ devices or typographical oddities. Earbery was a non-juring clergyman who was forced to flee to France to avoid arrest when a book of his critical of the monarchy was seized by the government in 1717 and was twice arrested for seditious libel in the decades following; the title of his pamphlet here can be considered ironical. The third pamphlet here is a little earlier and was also published with a London imprint in the same year. ‘This pamphlet was published before the elections of 1713; it tends to confuse more than to clarify matters in Scotland. Written from an Episcopalian point of view but from an English as opposed to a Scottish angle it was a complicated review of the distant and recent political past of Scotland with considerable attention to religious matters’ McLeod & McLeod Anglo-Scottish Tracts 1979.
