1893350682Reports of State Trials New Series HMSO London 1893. Hardcover. Fine. Interest in the trial reverberated across Ireland and Britain igniting fierce debate in Parliament at public gatherings and throughout the press. At its heart lay a bitter divide: some accused O'Connell of diluting the nationalist cause undermining the momentum for repealing the Union with Britain. Others saw him as a principled strategist navigating perilous ground. This expansive trial account captures the political tensions of the moment unfolding in a courtroom arena well-matched to O'Connell's formidable legal intellect. The trial marked a turning point in Irish nationalism weakening O'Connell's leadership and fracturing the Repeal movement. His commitment to peaceful protest lost credibility paving the way for more militant voices like Young Ireland. Though his conviction was overturned the trial exposed the limits of constitutional agitation under British rule and signaled the decline of moral force politics. 491 pages printed in double columns along with 3 platesand indexes. Bound in black boards with contrasting red label and gilt lettering. Published as volume 5 of the Reports of State Trials New Series 1893 and complete in itself. Size: 15 x 23 cms. 005068London: Wilson Printer Broadside printed on silk approximately 240mm x 305mm in size n.d. but probably late 1794 or very early 1795. Light surface soiling a couple of patches of foxing and a few spots of discolouring minor creasing very minor fraying to top and bottom edges possibly as issued linen hinge to left hand side. Celebrating the acquittal of John Horne Tooke who had with Thomas Hardy and John Thelwall been indicted for high treason. The jury only took minutes to acquit him. The broadside names the twelve gentlemen of the jury as well as Tooke's lawyers. The ESTC has a song sheet with the same title and a similar broadside printed by the radical Daniel Isaac Eaton but not this. The printer was Wilson the BBTI gives three possible Wilson's - Andrew Effingham and William. It seems likely that this would have only been produced in small numbers perhaps as a memento for the members of the jury and the principal protagonists For Horne Tooke see Baylen and Gossman 'Biographical Dictionary of Modern Radicals Volume 1: 1770-1830' pages 490-493.
