2017168605Stanford: Stanford University Press 2017. Hardcover. VG. Color-illustrated boards with black lettering. xxvii 323 pp. Color illustrations. Portraits. "The exploration of the human figure has been the pursuit of artists for millennia. Manuel Neri b. 1930 a California native and former student of Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira has spent a lifetime accentuating the gesture surface and materiality of the figure. He renders his work in several different mediums that include plaster marble bronze and paper. This exhibition drawn from and celebrating gifts donated to the museum by The Manuel Neri Trust provides a glimpse into the artist's creative process and his quest to define the figure on his own terms. Manuel Neri is known for his prolonged artistic engagement with the figure in a variety of materials starting with plaster in the late 1950s and moving into bronze and marble. The seven sculptures in the outdoor installation reference Neri's origins with plaster and his expressionistic manipulation of the medium. By casting plaster in bronze tactile surfaces are preserved and enhanced." -First Search. Stanford University Press hardcover books

2006104913000001New York and Manchester: Hudson Hills Press 2006. Hardbound. VG/VG. Aqua cloth with silver lettering aqua and slate gray illustrated dust jacket xvii 195 pp. 240 color plates. "This striking publication focuses on relief sculptures and related drawings by Manuel Neri. The extensive body of work is clearly grounded in a long sculptural tradition that stretches back through the Renaissance and Medieval sculpture to ancient architectural sites and underscores Neri's significance as a sculptor of international note whose works in plaster ceramic bronze and stone have merited him the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center. Neri has created figurative relief sculpture over a period of twenty-five years. His concern with the dynamic nature of the architectural or spatial environment has developed his keen understanding of its potency as a setting for the figure. His pieces possess incredibly rich and evocative surfaces and his ability to depict the figural form in various media with equal mastery and sensitivity is unrivaled. This publication documents not only reliefs but also more than fifty years of Neri's engagement with the partial figure."--Publisher's website. Hudson Hills Press hardcover books

191018705Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co. Very Good. 1910. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . decorated red cloth with gilt lettering; no dust jacket nice solid copy minor wear at extremities slight fraying to bottom corners spine cloth a bit faded; attractive vintage bookplate see notes and small bookseller's label F. Loeser & Co. Brooklyn Book Store on front pastedown. B&W photographs drawings In her preface the author states that her book "was written with the desire of portraying Spain of to-day as she really is" as distinct from the many books she claims have been written about the country with "little sympathetic understanding of that Latin temperament which is responsible for the development of Spanish institutions." Furthermore it has been "written from the standpoint of the Spaniard himself and the opinions expressed at to institutions and customs peculiar to the country are in all instances bona fide expressions of the purely Spanish point of view." Bullfighting in case you're wondering is dealt with as part of Chapter VI "Amusements." The bookplate is that of B. Benjamin Olney Hough and depicts a man presumably him holding a book while standing in front of a window that looks out upon a bustling harbor of sailing vessels -- a reflection of the fact that he was an import-export man editor of "The American Exporter" and the author of several books related to international trade including "Practical Exporting; a handbook for manufacturers and merchants" published in 1915. So why buy a crappy printed-on-demand reprint with blurry illustrations when you can have the real deal And yes that is why it costs a little more; thanks for asking. . A.C.
