1307937th President. Typed letter signed one page quarto. New Jersey April 12 1991 on personal letterhead to Honorable William Hyland. In full: "Dear Bill Talk about going into the lion's den. I thought you would like to see a list of those who attended an off-the-record appearance I made at a Carnegie Endowment forum in Washington Wednesday. I guess they thought that by having me they would balance the fact that Alger Hiss was once their President! Sincerely". During the Red Scare of the 40's and 50's Alger Hiss was accused of secretly being a Communist while in federal service. After Hiss appeared before Congress and denied being a Communist Nixon a Congressman at the time pressed the Committee to continue the investigation. Hiss was found guilty of two counts of perjury. In a curious way the reputation of Alger Hiss was permanently linked to that of Richard Nixon. The Nixon-haters have always been eager to exonerate Hiss while Nixon's fans are usually convinced of Alger's guilt as a spy. When Nixon was doing well for example when he was Vice-President and when he was a popular President during his first term Hiss's reputation suffered a decline. When Nixon did poorly as after his disastrous run for governor and especially during and after the Watergate crisis more people thought of Hiss as an innocent victim. "File" notation in blue marker at the top right otherwise in excellent condition. In over 2 decades it's the only Nixon letter we have ever seen mentioning Alger Hiss. unknown books

95226Rawlings Official Ball National League. Rare baseball signed by President Richard Nixon on the sweetspot. From the personal collection of Baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio. Accompanied by an original black and white photograph of DiMaggio and Nixon shaking hands in the White House also from DiMaggio's personal collection. In near fine condition. Included is letter of provenance from DiMaggio's estate signed by his two granddaughters. An exceptional association linking two American icons. President Richard Nixon was an avid baseball fan he attended 11 games while serving in office and in 1985 he arbitrated the dispute between the Major League Baseball owners and umpires over expanded league playoff bonuses. Nixon made headlines when on June 22 1972 a reporter covering the upcoming national election asked the President to name his all-time favorite ballplayers. Nixon's long list of great players inspired the reporter to make a unique request: the first ever presidential All-Star team. With the assistance of his son-in-law David Eisenhower Nixon put together the team and it appeared in national newspapers on June 30 1972. American baseball legend Joe DiMaggio is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time and is best known for his 56-game hitting streak May 15 - July 16 1941 a record that still stands. DiMaggio was one of the first sportsmen recognized in the Presidential Sports Award Program created by Richard Nixon in 1972. Rawlings Official Ball National League unknown books

Housed in a custom shadow box frame lined with blue velvet. In fine condition. The entire piece measures 22 inches by 14 inches. Held on January 20th 1973 the second inauguration of Richard Nixon marked the commencement of the second term of Richard Nixon as President and the second term of Spiro Agnew as Vice President. Nixon resigned one year and twenty days into the term and was succeeded by Gerald Ford who had previously succeeded Spiro Agnew as Vice President 263 days into Spiro's term and following his resignation. While Nixon's premature departure from office often dominates assessments of his presidency his legacy has undergone reevaluation in the more than 40 years since his resignation. Political historian and pollster Douglas Schoen has argued that Nixon was the most important American figure in post-war U.S. politics for his important domestic and foreign policy accomplishments including the foundation of the EPA in 1970 ending the United States Military draft in 1973 and signing the Paris Peace Accords that same year ending U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. unknown books

2201TLS. 1pg. 7 ¼†x 10â€. June 1 1968. New York NY. A typed letter signed “Dick†to E. Perkins McGuire affectionately referred to as “Perk:†“This is just a note to congratulate you on your election as a delegate to our National Convention in Miami Beach. Your work on behalf of the Republican Party in Washington makes it most fitting that you should have the responsibility to help select the man who will be the next President of the United States. As one who has served as a delegate I know that in the weeks before the convention you will probably be inundated by the mass material you will receive from the prospective candidates and their supporters. I do not want to add to your burden in that regard but I would like to take the liberty of sending you under separate cover some of the statements I have made on the major issues during the campaign. I hope to see you at Miami Beach if not before. You may be sure that whatever decision our party makes at the convention I shall look forward to working with you for victory in November.†Perkins served as the Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Eisenhower and was appointed by Nixon to be Chairman of the Commission on Government Procurement. As inferred by the letter the 1968 Republican National Convention was held August 5-August 8 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Florida at which time Nixon was selected to be the Republican nominee. He would go on to become President of the United States. Typed on Nixon’s personal letterhead the letter is in fine condition with some staining at the top. unknown books
