Résumé : Au VIe siècle de notre ère, la civilisation de l'Egypte pharaonique semble engloutie à jamais. Hellénisée, romanisée, christianisée, l'Egypte se coupe de son passé : ses hiéroglyphes deviennent lettres mortes, ses sanctuaires sont désertés ou transformés en églises. Ce n'est qu'au début du siècle dernier, avec la découverte décisive de Champollion, que commence la résurrection. Depuis cent cinquante ans, grâce aux efforts conjugués des linguistes et des archéologues, l'égyptologie a accumulé trouvailles et documents. La publication de ces derniers permet aujourd'hui de brosser un tableau d'ensemble de la civilisation égyptienne. Sans doute notre documentation reste-t-elle souvent fragmentaire et, pour une large part, tributaire du hasard, mais certains traits essentiels de l'ancienne Egypte apparaissent nettement sur le visage mutilé qui nous est restitué. Parmi les textes innombrables qui nous sont parvenus, le plus grand nombre traite de questions religieuses. Et cela n'est pas l'effet du hasard chez ce peuple épris d'éternité. On ne s'étonnera donc pas de la place qui leur est faite dans ce livre. D'une façon générale ; cet essai de synthèse, fait la part large aux textes. Pour peu que nous leur accordions une attention sympathique, textes et monuments anciens nous guident d'eux-mêmes vers la compréhension du passé et permettent de pénétrer dans le coeur de cette civilisation plus profondément qu'on n'aurait osé l'espérer. A propos de l'auteur : François Daumas, décédé en 1984, était professeur d'égyptologie à l'Université Paul Valéry IV de Montpellier.
