When, at the turn of the nineteenth century, Lord Elgin stripped the Parthenon of its sculptures and carried them to England, he saw himself as both preserving classical art for posterity and claiming the rightful heritage of the west. And when, soon after, the French government purchased an armless statue of Aphrodite on the island of Melos and displayed it triumphantly in the Louvre, it too identified France as the natural heir of antiquity. The Austrians and Germans, for their part, unearthed and brought home vast quantities of sculpture and architecture from throughout the Near East. Beginning in the mid-eighteenth century, European scholars and amateurs poured into Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Mesopotamia to explore, dig, catalogue, and cart home the material remains of the ancient world. The collections they amassed became celebrated museums; the scholarly techniques they developed formed the foundation of modern, scientific archaeology. But at the time, the lands they traversed and the antiquities they found belonged neither to the empires of Europe nor to local states; rather, the entire territory was the possession of the Ottoman Empire. What did the Ottomans think of the European passion for die past? What was their own view of the ancient worldand its heritage?Scramble for the Past explores the historiography of archaeology in the Ottoman domains between the founding of London's British Museum in 1753 and that of Istanbul's Evkaf Museum (Museum of IslamicArt) in 1914. This book resulted from the symposium on "Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa" which was held in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, on 31 August-3 September 2006. It was co-organised by IRCICA, Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA) and the University of Johannesburg. The symposium was a landmark event, first to be co-organised by the OIC and IRCICA in the region. It aimed, among others, to increase knowledge on the history and heritage of Islam in the OIC Member States and their neighbours in the region, and to promote dialogue amongst Muslim peoples in the region and with peoples of other faiths and cultures. After the opening addresses, the book contains the keynote article by Mahomed Haroon, titled "Southern African Muslim Communities in Context and Scholarship". Then come six articles under the section title Historical Background, five articles under Challenge of Racism and Response in Politics, seven articles under Spiritual Culture and Learning, and seven articles under Miscellany. The papers have been edited and prepared for publication by Mahomed Haroon and Suleman Essop Dangor, specialists of Islamic culture in Africa.

This is a collection of the papers that were presented during the international congress on "Islamic Civilisation in the Balkans" held in the Macedonian capital Skopje in October 2010. The congress, organized in cooperation with the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU), was fourth in IRCICA's congress series that focus on the history and cultures of the Balkan region. The Skopje congress was accorded high patronage and opened by H.E. Gjorge Ivanov, President of the Republic Macedonia. President Ivanov also participated in the congress in his capacity as an academician and presented a paper. This State support and scholarly contribution extended to the congress underscored the importance attached to its objectives. The first volume contains the papers that were presented in English or Turkish (39 papers) and the second volume, those presented in Macedonian, Albanian or Serbian (44 papers). Located at crossroads between Europe and Western Asia, the Balkan peoples have been in contact with the Muslim world since at least the 8th century. Various phenomena, including the long experience in trade between the two regions, helped fasten the expansion process, and enhance the notable cultural role, of Islam in the Balkans. The relationship between the Muslim world and the Balkans has not only been one of encounters and exchanges but also one of coexistence. Research papers contributed to the congress addressed a wide range of topics highlighting the multicultural relations specific to the Balkan region. IRCICA's engagement in studies on the region in connection with the history of Islamic civilisation draws from the above aspects of the theme and also takes into account that two Balkan countries are members of the OIC and IRCICA: Albania is a full Member State and Bosnia and Herzegovina is an Observer State. Previously, three congresses were held on the same theme, in Sofia (2000), Tirana (2003) and Bucharest (2006) respectively. A fifth congress was held in May 2015. This program devoted to the history of Islamic civilization in the Balkans has succeeded in drawing interest and participation from around the world in addition to the Balkan countries themselves and generated a fascinating range of studies, as the contents of this publication reflect.
