He distinguished himself at the battles of South Mountain and Antietam in Sept. 1862 while serving as aide-de-camp to Brigadier-General Samuel D. Sturgis commander of the 2nd Division 9th Army Corps. Sturgis praised Rawolle: "He was invaluable at all times carrying orders placing the artillery in favorable positions bringing up ammunition and making himself useful in every department." Rawolle accompanied Sturgis out west and then to Tennessee and participated in the fighting in Jan. 1864 around Dandridge Tenn. again garnering high praise from Sturgis. On 6 June 1868 Rawolle was commissioned a 2nd Lieut. in the 2nd Regiment U.S. Cavalry and by 1876 he held the rank of 1st Lieut. Co. B 2nd Cavalry but was transferred that month to Co. K 2nd Cavalry. 1763002197Nurembergh Nürnberg: Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib 1763. Paperback. Poor. 78 p. incomplete probably of 96 p.; 17 cm. Signatures: A-E8 -E8 8vo. The remains of a contemporary wrapper are attached along the spine but lacking otherwise. The remaining paper cover is lined with part of a page of a German-language book. Several ink notations in the lower margins indicating that this belonged to David Beidleman of Mifflin Town Mifflintown Pa. A few ink corrections of errors. A translation of Verbesserte und Erleichterte Lateinische Grammatica by Johann Joachim Lange 1670-1744 a German Protestant theologian. The year prior to this publication the same printer Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib had issued a 96-page French edition of the work: Dialogues de Feu Monsieur Lang Traduits du Latin Avec les Mots et Phrases de Chaque Dialogue: pour l'Usage des Jeunes Gens. In 1769 an English translation was published in London by Edward and Charles Dilly under the title: Easy and Pleasant Latin Conversations or One Hundred and Forty-four Dialogues on Common Subjects Morals and the First Part of the Roman History. The edition offered here was intended to help German speakers learn English. Unfortunately the translator John Justin Herwig had a less than perfect understanding of English. This may explain the scarcity of the item only one copy is listed on Worldcat with no physical description. The dialogues are grouped by "decades" or groups of 10 dialogues each. The final leaf of signature E is lacking and the text ends at the beginning of the 10th dialogue in the ninth decade the 9th group of 10. Presumably a final signature is also lacking which would have brought the page total to 96 which agrees with the size of the French edition issued one year earlier by the same printer. Extremely scarce and unusual 18th-century work. In Poor Condition: incomplete as described above; old soiling and dampstaining; stitching is going. Christoph Riegels seel. Wittib paperback

-- Prof. Dr. Michael Burleigh. Per Wikipedia Joseph Adam Lortz 1887 - 1975 In Luxembourg Was A Roman Catholic Church Historian. He Was A Highly Regarded Reformation Historian And Ecumenist. Beginning In The 1940'S Lortz Made His Ecumenical Views Available To General Readers As Well As To Scholars In Order To Promote Reconciliation Between Catholics And Protestants. His Writings Played A Role In The Thinking That Manifested Itself In The Second Vatican Council's Decree On Ecumenism Unitatis Redintegratio 21 November 1964. What Was Not Widely Known However Was Lortz's Involvement With Nazism From 1933 Until 1937. His Geschichte Der Kirche 1932 History Of The Church Portrayed The Church Of The 1800S And The 1900S As The Bastion Of Divine Truth And Moral Values Amid The Decay Of Western Society. After The War He Taught At The University Of Mainz From 1950 Until His Death In 1975. He Was Also Director Of The Institute Of European History In Mainz In The Department Of Western Religious History. His Successor At That Department Peter Manns De Was The Editor Of A Centennial Volume Of Lortz's Writings Published In 1987 And In His Preface He Touches On Lortz's History With The Nazis. Manns Says That Lortz Attempted To Find A "Legitimate" Way For Catholics To Connect To Nazism An Attempt He Calls An Error With Grave Consequences For Which Lortz Should Be Held Culpable And Manns Includes No Writings From That Period In The Volume. However He Argues That Lortz Was Not A Nazi Himself And That Such Is Proven By His Friendship With Avowed Opponents Of The Nazis Including Clemens August Graf Von Galen And Max Josef Metzger.

Herder & Co hardcover
