19108830London: George Philip & Son c. 1910. Folding map 50 x 61 cm printed in colours black and white map of the tramways on the verso folding into worn buff printed card wraps. A map sponsored by the Evening News published in various editions c. 1907-1910. Later editions of the map like this one which was in circulation until at least 1910 were printed with black rather than blue text and folded into buff rather than red covers. The earliest issue anticipated the colour coding of lines on official UERL maps by several months. The Evening News was responsible for coining the name Bakerloo Line for the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway and here the newspaper makes a relatively early reference to the 'tube' a nickname coined for the new deep-level tunnels. The cover graphically illustrates the construction of the tunnels divided into seven sections to represent the seven companies operating 'tube' trains. Map George Philip & Son paperback
