Advertisement for a school children's "Play Day" at the Sutro Baths in San Francisco which included bell ringing acrobatic feats dancing and a special performance from the London Patomime and Comedy Company. The Sutro Baths 1896-1966 was a public saltwater swimming pool in San Francisco built and owned by entrepreneur and former mayor of San Francisco Adolph Sutro and heralded at its opening as the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Sutro's idea was to provide an inexpensive recreational swimming facility mainly for the working class of San Francisco. In true progressive spirit Sutro also included natural history exhibits at the entrance to the baths as an educational opportunity. However due to their high maintenance and operating cost the baths were eventually converted to an ice skating rink and then sold in 1964 to property developers. A fire in 1966 destroyed what remained of the baths. Throughout its lifetime the Sutro Baths were the setting for a handful of films including two short films in 1897 by Thomas A. Edison and the 1958 American film noir "The Lineup." This leaf was likely an early promotional piece for the Sutro Baths. Louis Roesch Co unknown books

Rare et original feuillet publicitaire quadrilingue (français, anglais, italien et allemand) et illustré de vignettes gravées représentant les disciplines enseignées : escrime, canne et bâton, boxe française et anglaise, gymnastique et tir. Sans doute l'un des tout premiers documents attestant de l'arrivée à Paris de la vogue européenne de l'autodéfense civile à la fin des années 1840. Diffusé à un moment-clé, juste avant la codification moderne de la boxe française et de la canne, ce feuillet constitue une précieuse source d'informations sur l'émergence de ce nouvel enseignement martial urbain au milieu du XIXe siècle. Il montre l'implantation progressive de ces pratiques sportives autrefois privées dans un local public, la salle d'armes, dont le fonctionnement est largement explicité. L’organisation des activités (cours collectifs ou particuliers, en journée, en soirée et les jours chômés), la présence de professeurs qualifiés, les systèmes d'abonnement sont à l'évidence conçus pour satisfaire une clientèle moins aristocratique qu'issue de classes moyennes, française et étrangère, active, et désireuse d'occuper utilement ses loisirs. Enfin, ce tract n'est pas dépourvu d'un sens de la formule et de la présentation publicitaires, - par une subtile association texte-images-variations typographiques auxquels nos "flyers" contemporains n'ont rien à envier !

Elegant inscription in a vintage hand in two different colours black and brown the brown ink "Florence P. P. Beasley / from/ her affectionate brother / E. C. Flour manufactured from local wheat and "equal to any manufactured in the world!" It notes that new machinery ensures clean wheat and thus pure flour. Freeman Edson was one of the founding Directors of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Printed on plain cream-colored paper we've handled them printed on salmon-colored paper as well.
