ABOUT THE BOOK:- This book is a study of the role of local television stations in Kargil (India), which investigates whether the success of local media in Kargil is a result of fulfilling the needs and desires of the local community, using the methods of content analysis, interviews, and surveys. Kargili local television stations have adopted global media technologies for disseminating their programs, but at the same time have changed some of the television conventions to meet the needs and expectations of local viewers. This book is aimed at the hordes of young girls and boys who descend in an unceasing stream on the professional circuit intent on making a mark in life as managers. I have noticed in my decades as a professional, and in the decade teaching professional courses, how they innocently believe that management consists only of being obeyed. How greatly mistaken! This is a painstaking attempt to projects that management consists equally, if not more, of motivating, positioning, monitoring, marketing, persuading and other skills all of which require adept and varied communication methods. For, management begins with communication. If communication is not of the right kind, management is stillborn. Hope this make the youth realise this immutable fact of life. About The Author:- If there were a contest about the range of experience of a person, Prof. Adarsh Kumar Varma, would be very near the top of the table. He was distinguished a field, journalist for 33 years and rose to become the Editor of a daily, a weekly and a quarterly. Next he took up teaching and rose to become the Head of the Department of News Agency Journalism at the Indian institute of Mass Communication. Simultaneously he conceptualized the discipline of Advanced Journalism. The next stop was teaching the role of communication in management for the benefit of MBA students. All this while he kept on writing, writing, writing. There are more than 10000 published articles, and more are being written every month. There are six books including one with the tell-tale title Advanced Journalism. This, the seventh one, discusses his latest love, communication for management. This book attempts to bring together the Indian philosophical thoughts of Tagore, Gandhi, and Aurobindo on physical and material world as well as the thoughts of some modern writers on corporate world. Pointing out how Indian ancient philosophical schools deal with the physical world around us, it discusses at length the philosophy of Sri Aurobindo, Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi who tried to give matter and material world its due respect. Describing in detail the Nyaya, Vaisesika, Samkhya, Jaina, Bouddha and Vedanta views of the physical world, it takes stock of the attitude of the different cultural groups of the society towards the world of things. It is a hand book on and about poll surveys and the way they are being used by news media. It points to pre-emptive nature of media coverage of polls. A reference book for those in news media covering up and coming political leaders and aspiring candidates, as well as for budding psephologists and analysts in media, what they should look for from surveys and how they should be appraised. The book highlights transparency in conducting and in use of poll surveys. It reminds researchers and survey agencies, the challenge of upholding sanctity and significance of surveys in public domain. The book tracks long history of news media conducting surveys during objective and credible coverage of polls. It is an insider's view and outsider's concern but with a critical perspective. The book cautions about domino effect of survey syndrome and reminds positive potential of survey research. About The Author:- With active grassroots presence, Dr N Bhaskara Rao has unique background to write this book. Starting as an activist in electoral politics, he studied at two Indian and two USA universities. His 1967 book on politics of leadership was foremost on the subject. He ventured into poll surveys nationally more than 35 years ago and pioneered the methodology. He also had distinguished background of scaling up sample surveys in India in early 1970s. As an applied social researcher he had several path-breaking evaluation studies to his credit. He is founder of more than half a dozen premier research and academic outfits. He expanded ORG into a national outfit and launched media research and poll surveys first time. Dr. Rao held short term assignments with World Bank and ADB and pioneered 'social Audit' of public services in India (1991 1997). Studies in futures is one of his forte ('India 2020' in 1987). The role of press in the development of political consciousness varies with the social classes to which it communicates the press as now constituted in India is geared to preserve the status-quo which is heavily weighted in favour of the owners of the means of production ; it protects their rights, promotes their interests and fortifies their political organisations. There are two approaches which explain political participation/consciousness the—functionalist and the Marxist. However, the central premise of the books is that of reconciling the two major approaches of media communication. The functionalist consider voting as the main index of political consciousness, while the Marxist hold that political consciousness is a product of social history associated with the development of productive forces and is sharpened with the contradiction between the forces and relations of production. Accordingly, the functionalist give excessive importance to the press in the development of political consciousness is a product of its historical setting of the socio-economic configuration. The press only helps in the process of consolidation of political consciousness of the people under specific condition. In addition, the study gives a cogent account of the development of the Indian Press and contains useful data on ownership, control and circulation. About The Author:- Dr. Manu Bhaskar took her M.
