1932
An extremely rare Geneva publication featuring selected highlights from one of the richest Russian museums and one of the most famous.

A fine production here in a complete set with fresh plates in original wrappers.

The history of the Tretyakov Gallery started in 1856 when the Moscow merchant Pavel Tretyakov also Tretiakov; 1832-98 acquired important works by Russian artists of his day. As the collection rapidly expanded Tretyakov built a house to display the works making it equal in importance with the largest museums in Russia. In 1892 he presented his collection to the nation approximately 2000 works along with his private residence.

Pavel Tretyakov remained a trustee of the gallery and from 1893 onwards he started publishing annual catalogues of the collection under the title 'Opis khudozhestvennykh proizvedenii gorodskoi galerei P. i S. Tretiakovykh' Description of the art works from the P. and S. Tretyakov city gallery. Since then a number of more or less common publications featuring works from the collection was issued including one by Knebel in 36 issues 1901-03.
This Geneva edition however seems to be of utmost rarity. We could not trace it in the Russian State and National libraries neither in WorldCat KvK Copac; we couldn't find any example at auction in recent decades in the West like in Russia.
We couldn't find either any other publications by this publisher.
The title suggests that it might have been published before 1893 when the gallery was renamed into the 'Moskovskaia gorodskaia galereia Pavla i Sergeia Tretiakovykh' The Moscow City Gallery of Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov.

Description
Five folio issues with 6 photogravures in each.
Binding
Each issue in original printed colour wrappers.
Condition
Wrappers with multiple tears to flaps and spines some traces of old repairs with tape to spines; but plates bright and clean.
Tov. ‘Kooperativniy izdatel’, Geneve, [early 1890s]

This is most evident in his French drawings here presented thoroughly for the first time together with a searching commentary by noted scholar Yve-Alain Bois. In drawing Kelly evolved four strategies for making art: transfer chance modular grid and monochrome panel. His goal was to develop an alternative to traditional composition at once radically inventive and stubbornly personal. This catalogue presents an intimate view of the process of artistic conception. - This pioneering exhibition organized by the Art Museums and the Kunstmuseum Winterthur Switzerland will comprise approximately 220 drawings by Ellsworth Kelly from the 1948-1955 period. Many of these drawings in which one sees Kelly working out his abstract aesthetic have never been exhibited before. Yve-Alain Bois Joseph Pulitzer Jr. Professor of Modern Art at Harvard is the curator of the exhibition and will author a fully-illustrated catalogue. A special section of the exhibition will be devoted to Line Form Color a set of forty drawings and collages Kelly completed in 1951 for a projected book without words that was never realized. In conjunction with the exhibition Kelly has completed the book. The slipcase edition will include an essay by Harry Cooper associate curator of modern art and organizer of the exhibition at the Art Museums. Line Form Color will be on view in the Fogg's Straus Gallery and the remaining works in the exhibition will be on view in the Sackler's first floor exhibition gallery. -- with a bonus offer-- . He explored three primary concerns within this narrowly defined subject: how to imagine Christ as a man in a body how to inscribe himself Dürer into the image and how to account for his viewer in the scene. Because it spans his entire creative career Dürers Passion work not only charts his changing attitudes toward these issues it also provides a window onto his artistic development as a whole. The Essay volume includes an illustrated essay a list of the Passion series and related works and illustrations of related works. The Album volume includes illustrations of five of the Passion series: the Large the Green the Small the Engraved and the Oblong Passions. -- with a bonus offer-- . Univ paperback

It features nearly two hundred works of art gathered from premier collections in North America by the organizers at Harvard University's Arthur M. Sackler Museum. -- This exhibition explores for the first time the world of Byzantine women: how they adorned their bodies occupied their days decorated their homes and soothed their fears. Past exhibitions of Byzantine art have focused on the spirituality or imperial splendor of the Byzantine world including women only as empresses and saints. This exhibition will initiate a fresh discourse on women in Byzantium by displaying a variety of works of art and other objects and images related to them and their everyday lives. The female figure as represented through the classical tradition continued to be popular until about the middle Byzantine period 10th-11th century and is reflected through objects such as the elaborate bronze lamp stand from the Nelson Atkins Museum decorated with Aphrodite and frolicking Nereids and hippocamps. Objects and artifacts like the "wandering womb" amulets and a papyrus with a prayer for pregnancy bear testament to women's other concerns and desires. Women's activities in religious institutions as both patrons and participants are represented through devotional objects such as icons and crosses. Colorful textile fragments not only evoke the interior space inhabited by the women of Byzantium but also represent weaving one of the more common activities that occupied their days. Organized by Ioli Kalavrezou Dumbarton Oaks Professor of Byzantine Art in the Department of History of Art and Architecture this exhibition includes almost 200 objects from the collections of the Arthur M. Sackler Museum and borrowed from 13 major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art the Museum of Fine Arts the Walters Art Museum the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts the Morgan Library and the Royal Ontario Museum. The objects date from the fourth through the fifteenth century-the entire span of the Byzantine Empire-and represent a full range of media and subject matter. They include luxury objects such as ivories silver vessels and precious jewelry; utilitarian objects such as toiletries textiles and weaving tools; official objects such as coins and seals; and ritual objects such as icons and amulets. -- The objects presented here dating from the fourth to the fifteenth century illuminate the historic and the quotidian the renowned and the anonymous. They include luxury goods such as ivories silver vessels and jewelry; utilitarian items such as toiletry bottles and weaving tools; tokens of officialdom such as coins and seals; and ritual articles such as icons and amulets. Introductory essays by leading Byzantinists Ioli Kalavrezou and Angeliki E. Laiou place the objects in their artistic and historical context and each section of the catalogue focuses on an aspect of public or private life: civic society elite women public devotion work the home marriage adornment and health. -- Ioli Kalavrezou is Dumbarton Oaks Professor of Byzantine Art History at Harvard University. -- with a bonus offer-- .
