Lisbet. = An early European ethnographic depiction of a Native Californian ceremonial dancer produced in Germany in the mid-1840s prior to California statehood and the Gold Rush. The figure is shown in ritual dress with feathered headdress skirted regalia and ceremonial staff rendered in vivid hand-applied color. Works of this type circulated in illustrated ethnographic and geographic publications intended to introduce European audiences to Indigenous cultures of the Americas. Hand-colored wood engraving xylography. Image size approx. 9.5 × 6.25 inches 24.2 × 15.5 cm. German caption beneath image. Presented professionally matted and ready for framing. The sheet presents with strong well-preserved hand coloring and expected light age toning to the paper. A subtle indentation is present above the figure's head extending through the upper portion of the spear; this is shallow angle-dependent and does not break the paper surface.
