L'artiste a effet représenté la vie du Diacre Paris, figure essentielle du jansénisme parisien au XVIIIe siècle, dont l'ensemble des dessins préparatoires à la sanguine ont pu être acquis par Port-Royal. En 2018 une Allégorie de la Foi terrassant l'Ignorance puis quatre dessins acquis en deux temps qui preparent l'ouvrage Histoire du Vieux et Nouveau Testament (dit Bible de Mortier) ont rejoint les collections du musée. Les recherches menées à l'occasion de ces deux achats ont révélé qu'un pan complet de la carrière de Bernard Picart n'était encore que très peu étudiée. Français exilé au Pays-Bas, c'est surtout pour son commerce de gravure et son rapport à la religion qu'il est étudié. Bien que sa veuve elle-même décrive le goût de Picart pour le dessin et la difficulté avec laquelle il du s'appliquer à la gravure, très peu de publications s'intéressent au dessinateur passionné trop souvent dissimulé derrière ses estampes. A partir de ses collections, le musée national de Port-Royal des Champs souhaite pouvoir présenter une exposition dédiée à la passion du dessin chez Bernard Picart. Un partenariat essentiel s'est alors imposé par l'ampleur de ses collections : le Rijksmuseum qui dispose du fonds d'atelier du peintre. A l'aide de ces deux collections, généreusement rejoints par des collections privées françaises, il devient alors possible d'explorer le dessin de Bernard Picart. Pour la gravure les esquisses à la sanguine précèdent des feuilles plus détaillées à la plume. Mais au-delà de ce besoin professionnel, Picart explore de multiples aspects du dessin. Il le pratique d'après les maîtres ou d'après modèle. Il n'hésite pas à quitter l'atelier pour dessiner d'après la Nature, le théâtre et la rue. C'est aussi dans son environnement familial qu'il puise des sujets parfois difficiles, tels son fils mort prématurément à trois jours. Multiple par ses techniques et ses sources d'inspirations, le dessin chez Bernard Picart se révèle derrière les gravures comme une richesse encore trop méconnue. L'exposition Bernard Picart (1673-2733), dessinateur de Paris à Amsterdam est conçue pour devenir le deuxième tome d'une saison intitulée Le Dessin à Port-Royal née en 2018 avec Traits divins. Tous les ans le musée national de Port-Royal des Champs entend proposer une exposition dédiée au dessin ouvrant en même temps que le Salon du dessin de Paris. This is an about very good hardcover copy in a good dust jacket. The jacket front and back panels are present, but spine of jacket mostly perished. The top edges of both panels chipped, the front more heavily. Very clean inside, however the paper is very acidic and the edges of the text pages have browned. Text in Italian. The book is illustrated with 21 original serigraphs by Mino Maccari. These are printed on a lighter, better quality paper. The colors are fesh and bright. Palazzeschi's fabulous creatures are playfully interpreted by Maccari, who also used two of the decorations for the front and back panel of the dust jacket. Two different illustrations have been applied directly to the paper-covered boards. There is one brief inscription in Italian from the period on the front endpaper. The headpieces and vignettes in black & white are also by Maccari. 11" high X 8" wide, 164 pages. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
