1902220266Japan. No date. Circa1902. Two very attractive colour folded manuscript maps one showing China and the other Korea.

Map of China: Watercolour map 48 x 63.5cm. Closed tear now professionally repaired.

Map of Korea: Finely detailed watercolour map a few tiny holes very neatly repaired on the verso with archival washi. 33 x 24.5cm Two delicate hand-painted maps one of China and one of Korea produced by a Japanese student cartographer named Koike Tokushige 小池徳重.

The undated map of China appears to have been produced in the first five years of the twentieth century: a time when Japan had recently colonized Taiwan and when Japanese economic and political interest in the region was rapidly expanding. The inscription on the map suggests that it was a third year college project. But the high level of detail suggests that the artist had considerable experience of map making. The map of China shows the main provinces rivers major transport routes the Great Wall and the location of key cities although the names of the cities are not included. It also shows outlines of the Korean Peninsula Taiwan and the Japanese island of Kyushu but not the rest of Japan.

The map of Korea is more detailed. It provides an accurate outline of the Korean Peninsula with careful hatching indicating changes in elevation. Rivers and major road routes are shown on the map and the locations of major towns are marked though only Busan and Incheon are named. Dotted lines show coastal sea routes and routes between Kyushu and Busan and between Incheon and China. The map shows the Gyeongin railway line between Seoul and Incheon which was completed in 1899 and route of the Gyeongbu railway line between Busan and Seoul whose construction started from both ends in 1901. But the map depicts only small sections of this line close to Seoul and Busan as being completed with the rest more lightly outlined to show the projected route implying that the map was drawn around 1901-1902 and certainly before the Gyongbu line was opened in 1904.

Inserted text gives the land area and population of Korea. Rather strangely though the figure given for the Korean population is vastly underestimated. Ikeda gives this as 5.7 million when in fact at that time is was around 18 million. . unknown

1920219786Circa1920s - 1930s. Collection of twenty-six loose photographs and five postcards two in colour. Photograph sizes vary but most are 10 x 14cm a few a bit smaller. The largest photograph measures 17.1 x 27.3cm and while silvered and torn with loss at the lower left corner is a lovely period piece showing a Japanese man driving an early 20th century car and an attractively dressed western-style Japanese woman looking on. In general the photographs show signs of wear some corner tears evidence of removal from albums or silvering but are still a fascinating collection showing people at home at work or on a day out. An interesting collection of photographs and postcards mostly black-and-white with a couple of coloured postcards. They appear to come from the family album of Japanese migrants to Hawaii or California. Most date from the 1920s and 1930s although one postcard was written during a visit to Paris in the 1950s. A few have dates on the back - the oldest being a photo of a smartly-dressed Japanese couple dated 1921 it is difficult to tell whether this was taken in Japan or the USA.

Two photographs dated 1929 and 1931 show a Japanese woman with her small daughter - in one image she is shown with an Anglo-European family. There a studio photograph of a Japanese man holding serious-looking photographic equipment suggesting that at least one member of the family was a keen photographer. A particularly interesting shot shows the interior of a shop evidently run by the family selling a wide range of goods from electric fans cooking utensils baskets padlocks and other items. The family seems to have prospered quite well since several photos show outings in their car and a trip to Santa Cruz and the collection also includes a postcard from the famous Hotel Wawona in Yosemite National Park California. Another postwar postcard sent from Paris to the Tsuchiya family in Numazu describes a trip from Japan where the writer apparently stayed with the Tsuchiyas to France via Switzerland. . unknown

Founded in 1974 during the energy crisis by Elizabeth "Liz" Carmichael the company promoted the Dale a fuel-efficient three-wheeled two-seater designed by Dale Clifft taking deposits and investment for cars that were never produced. The Revelle and the Vanagen advertised at $2500 and $2850 never advanced beyond renderings like this one. The company collapsed amid fraud charges and Carmichael a transgender woman with a prior criminal history fled with investor funds. The story was the subject of the 2021 HBO docuseries "The Lady and the Dale." Scarce original sales literature for a car that was never built. Twentieth Century Motor Car Corp unknown
