New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16,5 cm). In English. 94 p. The Hittites: The story of a forgotten Empire. Recent discoveries have retorted the critic's objections upon himself. It is not the Biblical writer but the modern author who is now proved to have been unacquainted with the contemporaneous history of the time. The Hittites were a very real power. Not very many centuries before the age of Elisha they had contested the empire of Western Asia with the Egyptians, and though their power had waned in the days of Jehoram they were still formidable enemies and useful allies. They were still worthy of comparison with the divided kingdom of Egypt, and infinitely more powerful than that of Judah.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). Color ills. 141 p. The lapidary collection of the Museum of Saint Sophia constitutes a priceless patrimony of sculpted marbles; though little known, it deserves of complete and systematic study. This guidebook is conceived as a useful companion devoted to the scientific divulgation of this important collection of sculptures of the city of Istanbul. Each marble sculpture, pleasantly arranged in the blooming garden in front of Saint Sophia, represents a significant "tessera" in the mosaic of the Late Antique and Byzantine city. This book offers all visitors to the Museum the opportunity to become more acquainted with these "marble treasures", treasures so frequently disregarded as a result of the overshadowing magnificence of the Justinianic building.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 163 p. Color ills. Labraunda is an ancient site in south-western Turkey, excavated by Swedish archaeologists. This solitary place was a pilgrim sanctuary and the sacred center for the ancient Karians; a paved road for sacred processions led there from Milas. The shrine at Labraunda was the most important one in this part of Karia. This guide to the Swedish excavations contains both a description of the buildings that were erected in honour of the god Zeus Labraundos and an account of how the site was rediscovered in the 19th century. Labraunda is worth a visit not only because of the well-preserved remains of the unique banqueting hall Andron A and the other ruins, but also for the beautiful location and the splendid panorama view it offers. It is also unusual to find an ancient sanctuary, which, after its heyday, remained almost unchanged. It is therefore still possible to imagine what the sanctuary looked like in the 4th century BC, at the time when Karia was ruled by Maussollos and Idrieus.
