New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 21,5 cm). [x], 217, [1] p. In English. Color and b/w ills. This publication is the first result of investigations that began as conversations and contemplations with my long-term advisor and mentor Machteld J. Mellink during a visit toTarsus in May 1998. The occasion for the visit was the 20th Annual Excavation Results Symposium hosted by the Ministry of Culture, General Directorate of Monuments and Museums. The idea of preparing for a Bogaziçi University Expedition to Cilicia took shape as one of many projects contrived at our annual sojourn in ancient Myndos (Gümüslük) with Daryo Mizrahi and Selçuk Esenbel. The encouragement and sustained support of Selçuk Esenbel, Professor of History and at the time Chair of the History Deparment at B. U. to initiate such a project laid the ground for all future work.
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English. 396 p., ills. Komana small finds (Settlement Archaeology Series 7). The aim of this book has been to collect papers on small finds recovered during the excavations at Komana between 2009 and 2018. It also marks the 10th year of excavations. Komana is a sanctuary site during the Hellenistic period, a place of worship for the kings as well as people from all over the country. It existed through the Roman and then the Byzantine period, was mentioned in the early Turkish written sources and reached the Turkish Republican period as a small rural village. The site is and was in a rural setting, surrounded by agricultural land along Yesilirmak and its economy depended on agriculture throughout its history. The rural character was not a limitation for the site, on the contrary an attraction due to the wealth it generated. There are clear imports from the Aegean among the scarce finds from the Hellenistic period just like the wealthy finds from the Byzantine and Danishmend / Seljuk periods indicating contacts with Corinth, Byzantium, Cilicia, Iran, Egypt. Contents: D. Burcu ERCIYAS / Archaeology at Komana.; Tasha VORDERSTRASSE / Experiencing the Medieval Churches of Komana.; Meryem ACARA ESER / Objects from Daily Life at Komana: Jewelry.; Yunus Emre KARASU - Nursen ÖZKUL FINDIK / Figured Ceramics Found at Komana (Tokat) Excavations.; Tasha VORDERSTRASSE / Lamps from the Roman - Middle Islamic Periods .; Gülseren KOYUN ESEN / Small Finds at Komana Made of Bone, Clay and Stone.; Evangelia PISKIN - Hilal KÜNTÜZ / Bone Working Waste: The Infamous Bone Worker and Other Craftsmen Peeking Through the Animal Bone Assemblage from Medieval Komana.; Ceren ÜNAL / Byzantine Coin Finds from the Komana Excavation: A Preliminary Study.; Polina IVANOVA / The Coins: Danishmend / Seljuk Phase.; Ömür BAKIRER / Komana Glass Bracelets, Preliminary Report.; Nurdan YÜCEL - Emine N. CANER-SALTIK / Structural and Compositional Characteristics of Komana Bracelets: Initial Investigations.; Gökben AYHAN / An Evaluation on Tobacco Pipes Usage in the Tokat Region / In the Light of Tobacco Pipe Findings of Komana Excavation.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In German and Turkish summary. [x], 247 p., 43 b/w plates, 2 color plates. Ills.

The Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums was appointed to lead the archaeological excavations at Uskudar, Sirkeci, Sultanahmet and Yenikapi station constructions of Marmaray and Metro Projects, among the most important transportation projects of Turkey. Our largest area of excavation is at Yenikapi on the Marmara coast, the area known as Langa, which housed the harbour of Byzantine Istanbul. Excavations at Theodosian Harbour brought to light, to date, a total of 31 shipwrecks of various sizes and types. Archaeological work on shipwrecks requires an entirely different expertise; therefore, our Museum has authorised Istanbul University's Department of Restoration and Conservation with the documentation, lifting, conservation-restoration works as well as preparing the shipwrecks for display at the museum. The team started the work with a big staff and has already completed the lifting of and has taken into conservation eleven shipwrecks in conformity with the international norms and standards. The book in your hands explicitly presents the work conducted by the IU team employing the latest technology available, their scientific approach and the care and importance they pay to the work. New English Original bdg. hc. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English and Turkish. [xiv], 213 p., color ills. Yenikapi shipwrecks. Vol. 2: Woods of Yenikapi shipwrecks.= Yenikapi batiklari. Cilt 2: Yenikapi batiklarinin ahsaplari. Salvage excavations conducted at Yenikapi within the frame of Marmaray and Metro projects brought to light the Theodosian Harbour and rare archaeological remains. The new finds that extended Istanbul's history to 8000 BP include an assembly of 37 shipwrecks dated to the fifth through eleventh centuries AD. This book deals with the genus-species identifications of 27 shipwrecks unearthed by Istanbul Archaeological Museums Directorate and processed by the Division of Conservation of Marine Archaeological Objects, Faculty of Letters, Istanbul University. More than 3000 samples were analysed by Prof. Dr. Ünal Akkemik of Istanbul University's Faculty of Forestry. All the shipwrecks uncovered belong to the Byzantine period; however, those of the fifth-seventh centuries were built with coniferous trees like cypress and pine whereas those of the ninth-eleventh centuries were built with broad-leaved trees like oak and chestnut. Ships of the seventh-ninth centuries, on the other hand, reflect a mixture of both tree groups. In overall, the wood identifications indicate a change from the coniferous trees to broad-leaved trees in the time span of fifth to eleventh centuries. Study of the 27 wrecks has not only cast light onto the shipbuilding techniques of the Byzantine period but also produced an invaluable database revealing the change in woods used.
