New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). 67 p. In Turkish. Color and b/w ills. First Edition. "Each villager was the lord of his own piece of land. Everybody had a two-storied house in the village. In addition, a summer home surrounded with walnut, almond, apple, pear and cherry trees and vegetable gardens. Andnobody neglected to decorate their gardens with flowers. And the streams springing on ali sides never stopped flowing. When the wheat and barley were ripe our fields were like gold gilt seas. You would never find elsewhere olive trees such as ours, full of olives so much that the branches touched the ground, round and black olives, glimmering olive trees. Olive oil was a slow but reliable source of income. But figs. Figs filled the belt of the villagers with gold! Our figs were famous not only in Aydin province but also in the East, Europe and America. Such a thin skin almost non-existing, honeyed with the sun of Anatolia." Dido Sotiriou.

Fascinating piece of depression-era Canadian monetary-reform ephemera. This 5.8" x 4.3" double-sided slip provides a backside application form to join the Free Economy League of Canada. The front side features a suggested sample of a Gesell Scientific Currency Note entitled "United Provinces of Canada Currency Note". The "One Dollar" note includes twelve boxes, representing each month in 1936. With the passing of each month this note was declared to be subject to a 1% demurrage stamp charge. Presumably the motivation behind such an instrument was to encourage spending during the depths of the Great Depression, just as negative interest rates of more recent times have similarly been aimed. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear. Impress your friends with this incredible shrinking currency! Book

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. In Italian. 211 p. Color ills. New Italian Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In Italian. 726 p., color ills.

New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English, abstract in Turkish. 129 p., color plts. A terracotta treasure at Assos. During the summer of 1995 Turkish archaeologists discovered a unique Late Classical tomb in the Western Necropolis of Assos. A modestly designed cist grave, Tomb 4 surprised excavators with the richest cache of grave goods ever found at the ancient city. The 62 well-preserved artifacts, which date from the 4th century BCE, when Aristotle's school of philosophy was active at Assos, consist of terracotta figurines, gold and bronze jewelry, and vases. The variety of the coroplastic group is especially striking. The types include seated female musicians and a poet, an oklasma-dancer, comic actors, goddesses, a horse-rider, a warrior, female mask protomes, miniature furniture, various animals, and a figurine vase. The main purpose of this publication is to examine the finds from Tomb 4 and to shed light on characteristics of coroplastic produc-tion and socio-cultural life at Assos during its "Golden Age" through a contextual, typological, and iconographical analysis of the terracotta figurines. The variety of the figurines not only gives clues about the identity of the tomb-owners, but also hints at the many aspects of the "Golden Age" of Assos, such as the fertility cults active in the city, the increasing importance of the theatre, the place of women in socio-religious life, and the commercial and cultural relations of Assos with the neighbouring cities, especially Athens.
